New Training Courses for Trustees
We’ve got three new training sessions now scheduled to support Trustees. VANEL continues to champion effective governance for charities and community groups, so we’ve put on these cost effective courses to help you to proactively support your own trustees.
Many more details on each of these sessions will be out soon. In the meantime, here’s a summary of what’s on offer:
All of the training sessions will be held at VANEL offices at the Elms, 22 Abbey Road, Grimsby.
Each course is £20 per person (non-member organisations £30 per person)
Space is limited, so please book early. We may also restrict attendance to 2 attendees per organisation. However, at your request, there is also an option for us to run each course specifically for a single organisation/board at a convenient time or venue. Please speak to Karl if you would like to discuss this.
1. An introduction to Trusteeship
Friday 28th February. 9.30am-12.30pm.
This training session is aimed at new charity Trustees (or those needing a refresher). It’s for charity trustees rather than simply committee members. The session will cover all the basics that you need to know: your role, your responsibilities, what legal issues do you need to consider, how you should behave, what skills or approaches do you need. We’ll demystify trusteeship and all the terminology so that you’re able to concentrate on your role supporting your charity.

Friday 28th March. 9.30am-12.30pm.
This training session is aimed more specifically at Chairs or other Trustees who want to learn about how to develop their board/governance. The session will help you to understand how to develop your board further to make it more effective and efficient and able to achieve more and serve your charity better.
Although this session is mostly aimed at charity trustees, it’s about general governance approaches so will be suitable for other committees (non-charities).
We’ll cover the toolkits and frameworks you could use for your board development. Dispel some of the myths about board development. Look at how to manage your development approach, resources, timescales, approaches, tips and techniques.
We’ll be looking for practical approaches so that you and your board can form a plan of action of what to tackle first and how to improve your governance.

Friday 2nd May. 9.30am-12.30pm.
Technology has never been more important. And technology is an opportunity for voluntary and community groups, charities and social enterprises to do things better or to do better things. But technology can also be risky, or complex, or frightening. The skills and resources available to groups can be very varied, and hence so can the implementation of technology in different organisations.
This session is aimed at educating trustees and/or committee members to current issues around technology, what they mean, what might be the impact or opportunity and what approaches should be taken by boards/committees in ensuring that technology benefits their organisation. We normally have a lead on finance on a committee – but why not a lead on IT?
So if your board would like to better understand cloud technology, mobile tech, digital by default, social media, web development and other technical topics, then this could be the course for you.
