Governance weekly for 18th January

The weekly roundup from VANEL on good governance, charity trusteeship and non-profit leadership. News, information, resources and ideas. Complemented by our “aboutgovernance” online discussion space for leaders and trustees and our @aboutgovernance Twitter feed.

The latest monthly governance blog from NCVO is out (for January). Read it here. Only a couple of notices this month, but as always, you and your fellow trustees should have a read. I’m especially interested that the Charity Commission is producing a new, template ‘welcome pack’ for new charity trustees. It’s only currently at the design and feedback stage, but this is very necessary for the smallest charities which probably don’t have much in the way of this already in place. I’ll be watching out for this new resource.

Something to read: Sir Stuart Etherington’s open letter for New year to the voluntary sector. Read more about this and his accompanying pamphlet here.

Don’t forget we still have a wide range of governance and trusteeship related training courses scheduled. Check out the calendar here. Of course if you need something but none of these courses or dates seem to fit your need please speak to me. I do bespoke training with trustees or boards according to your requirements – let’s have a discussion.

Another ongoing reminder about data protection – namely getting your charity/organisation ready for the upcoming GDPR. Read my development blog article this week here. Don’t ignore it.

And finally for this week, a reminder that the Charity Commission needs you to get your annual returns in soon if your financial year ended 31st March 2017. You have until 31st January to get it submitted. If that means you – get it done!

As always, more governance news from next week.
