Governance Weekly for 19th October

The weekly roundup from VANEL on good governance, charity trusteeship and non-profit leadership. News, information, resources and ideas. Complemented by our monthly “View from the Top” e-newsletter (Trustee Network members only), our “aboutgovernance” online discussion space for leaders and trustees and our @aboutgovernance Twitter feed.

The NCVO monthly Governance roundup for October is out on the NCVO blog. Read it here. The important content to read this month is an explanation related to the “Charity Governance Code” explaining the difference between “apply” and “explain” when using the Code. i.e. how much should your organisation and board be applying to your organisation and how much should it simply be guiding you.  It’s an important clarification on how the Code works in practice so if you’ve started out with the Code yourselves then worth a read.

To that end if you need help in applying the Code to your own governance on your board or committee then please contact Karl at VANEL to discuss how we might be able to help or advise you.

A reminder that National Trustees’ Week is getting closer. This year it is 13th-19th November and VANEL will be organising relevant activities during the week. That week is also the NCVO Trustees Conference down in London and I’ll be reporting at and after the event to share national headlines around trusteeship and governance good practices. Later in the week – on Wednesday the 15th VANEL will hold a “Governance Challenge Workshop” at our offices when any trustee/committee member from our Member or Friend organisations is welcome to come along to look at current challenges around voluntary sector governance, best practices, approaches, support and future thinking. More details over the next few weeks. Place will be limited and booking required (free to attend). Speak to me (Karl) for more information.

It’s worth timing things around Trustees Week to look at getting hold of training or development resources. Most years NCVO makes much of their Trustee development materials free for the week and I think they are doing so again this year.  If you need materials that week might be a way to get them cheaper.

More news next week…
