Operations are well underway with VANEL’s newest ‘Reaching Communities’ programme, “IGNITE”: “Helping Young People To Lead Their Communities”. The three year programme, which is funded by the National Lottery’s Big Lottery Fund, aims to inspire, support and motivate young people aged 16 to 30, to become leaders within their community through volunteering.
Overseeing the programme is former “Enfuse” Youth Development Manager, Jenny Hodson. Jenny is the Youth Leadership Manager for the IGNITE programme and works alongside Youth Leadership Worker’s Victoria Russell and Lisa Anderson. Also working as part of the IGNITE team, is VANEL’s Communication Assistant, Helen Pickett. Together, Jenny, Victoria and Lisa and Helen are working with Youth Leadership Mentors, Chris Luckman and Marie Rodger. Chris graduated from The University of Lincoln in 2016 with a degree in Politics, and Marie is in the third year of her Criminology degree at The Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education.
The team will be going out into the community and encouraging young people from around North East Lincolnshire to get involved with the IGNITE programme as Project Leaders and volunteers. Young people involved with the programme will have the opportunity to plan and receive funding for, a project of their choosing which benefits their community. The Youth Leadership team will be working closely with volunteers’ and their host organisations, offering advice, training and support throughout. The programme works with, compliments and builds upon VANEL’s Awards for All funded “Young Leaders” project which is running until March 2017.
So far the IGNITE programme has worked with 18-year-old Shona O’Reilly, who prior to getting involved with IGNITE, had no experience as a project leader or a volunteer. With a little help from the IGNITE team, Shona successfully organised a vintage themed Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday 30th September at Tukes’ Café in People’s Park, Grimsby. The event came after weeks of hard work and planning and featured a tombola and a cake competition. Also in attendance were Media Make-Up students from the Grimsby Institute, who offered their face painting skills in exchange for a donation to Macmillan. All in all, the event was a huge success, raising an incredible £292.27 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
When asked how she felt about working with the IGNITE team, Shona said: “I would love to work with IGNITE team again in the future. Helping to organise the Macmillan coffee morning has given me more confidence and shown me that every little helps. I have loved meeting the IGNITE team, they have made me feel more than welcome when coming in to the VANEL office”.
