The Next Generation Group are very keen to engage the young people and their families with outdoor education and to enrich the community. They have run a 1-to-2-hour Green Influencers club once a month at the park. To form this group, they needed a minimum of ten young people (aged 10 to 14) to sign up. They do however welcome all ages to join in their activities (under 10 years needs to be accompanied by an adult).
They have been engaged in the development of the memorial garden within Duke of York Gardens in West Marsh of Grimsby. This has involved planting a range of bushes along the edge for security and currant bush fruit to make it a welcoming community free fruit collection area.
The group is led by Grimsby in Bloom.
They are keen to expand the garden with more fruit and vegetable patches. They would like to add wildlife areas including bird, bat and hedgehog boxes. These can be made in a woodwork session run by the group. In addition to this, they have been considering a small wildlife pond area to attract more diverse wildlife, especially as the park has the River Freshney running through it
Once work is complete it is hoped that the memorial garden will be opened during daylight hours to allow community members to be able to sit and relax amongst smell of herbs and wildlife attracted, while eating locally grown fruit.
