Governance Weekly for 15th December
The weekly roundup from VANEL on good governance, charity trusteeship and non-profit leadership. News, information, resources and ideas. Complemented by our monthly “View from the Top” e-newsletter (Trustee Network members only), our “aboutgovernance” online discussion space for leaders and trustees and our @aboutgovernance Twitter feed.
NCVO’s monthly Governance roundup on their blog is always useful and their December roundup is just out. It’s here. Not a lot exciting this month, but a couple of points of note:
A reminder that the consultation on the new “Charity Governance Code” is still open. This is a powerful and useful rework of what was the “Code of Good Governance” at it’s really worth all trustees and boards familiarising yourself with the new Code, or ideally contributing to the consultation.
NCVO have just also published 4 very very simple and easy to use free guides to charity Trusteeship. These are derived from the excellent “Good Trustee Guide” book (which has been out years, is a recommended read for any Trustee, and which VANEL has a couple of copies in our library for any of our Members to borrow if they want to). Read more about the guides development here or download them from here. They are:
What is a charity?
What is a charity trustee?
What trustees must do
How trustees look after the charity
They are very useful so have a look and pass them onto others you think may benefit.
Opportunities
A quick reminder that HealthWatch is still looking to recruit to it’s board, so take a look at the details in the last of our news bulletins here.

The View from the Top
Our December edition of “The View from the Top” e-newsletter goes out today. If your organisation is a Member or Friend of VANEL and you are a Trustee, on the board or interested in governance or trusteeship in general, then you can receive the e-newsletter for free as part of your membership support. If you subscribe already then we hope you find this issue interesting. If you’re not subscribing already then just email me (karl@vanel.org.uk) and I’ll add you to the mailing list.
This month our in-depth articles are…
Rebuilding Trust in Charities
Be on your best behaviour
Getting the Induction process right
Trustees and the Board as leaders
Learning from this years Trustee Conference
Hopefully there’s something in there to inspire or educate you. As always, each of the articles are repeated on our private AboutGovernance online discussion space for members of the VANEL Trustees Network to add their opinions, thoughts, ideas and questions.
Merry Christmas
This will be the last “Governance Weekly” from VANEL before Christmas, so I wish you and your fellow trustees/committee members a very good Christmas and we’ll see you in the New Year.
