Young people in Grimsby and Cleethorpes are gaining money management skills!
A 23 year old Grimsby woman with a 2:1 Masters in Business from the University Centre Grimsby is delivering a program to help young people be money savvy. Local young people are involved in this national project that teaches them vital money skills, from managing a bank account to avoiding problems with payday loans. And training is in partnership with UK Youth and Lloyds Bank.
Research suggests that young people find it difficult to forecast their financial future and plan ahead. 42% 14-25 year olds cannot interpret the difference between being in credit and overdrawn on a bank statement. 60% of young people are not taught money management skills at school.
By 2019 the project aims to help 80,000 young people nationally feel financially confident. Workshops are being organized for over the Easter holidays and more information is to follow. A young person that completed the programme said that: ‘’Money For Life is really important for me because I want to go to university and need to manage my money better when living away from home’’.
The project is being delivered by Danielle who is part of the Grimsby IGNITE project. Based at VANEL’s offices on Bargate, IGNITE is a funded project which employs young people to help 16 to 30 year olds obtain the skills to set up their own community initiatives. There are also opportunities for young people to receive £400 of funding to be money mentors themselves. Visit the IGNITE Facebook page for more information on how to get involved and book on to the course or email ignite@vanel.org.uk.
