Governance Weekly for 18th May

The weekly roundup from VANEL on good governance, charity trusteeship and non-profit leadership. News, information, resources and ideas. Complemented by our monthly “View from the Top” e-newsletter (Trustee Network members only), our “aboutgovernance” online discussion space for leaders and trustees and our @aboutgovernance Twitter feed.

“The looming crisis in charity trustee recruitment” is a hard-hitting report out this week from Getting on Board, an organisation which encourages more people to become trustees.

Worth a read (get it here). The subtitle is “How poor trustee practices threaten to damage the effectiveness of UK charities”. We all want charities to be effective and beneficial to our communities, so it’s important that trustee recruitment works well. Yet we all know that in reality it’s a challenge.

The report simplifies down to 4 possible solutions which we should all look at closely to see how this can work for our organisations. In essence these solutions include:
. Increased awareness of the role of trustees
. Improve and update charity recruitment practices overall and learn from good practice
. Develop clearer ‘pathways to trusteeship’
. Acknowledge issues around diversity and commit to strategies to improve this.

VANEL has a “Better Recruitment” workshop being planned soon, so if your charity or committee is interested in this topic please do get in touch.

The “Technology for Trustees” training session scheduled for Friday 19th May has been postponed. We’ll reschedule, but this course, like some of our other trustee, governance and leadership development courses will also be available online shortly, so if you’re interested in how your board can better take advantage of technology then let me know & either the rescheduled course or the online version may be useful to you.

Finally, a reminder about our “Induction and Refresher Training for Trustees”. Our next session is still on Friday 26th May, 10am-12noon at VANEL offices & £10pp for members. Places are still available. Find out more here and contact me to book a place.
