Future of the Kasbah
On 25th May the planning committee, by a narrow vote, allowed the demolition of the Cosalt Building to go ahead without further scrutiny. This means a substantial part of the Kasbah will be lost. But the Great Grimsby Ice Factory Trust is still campaigning for the protection of the remaining buildings on the historic dock peninsula – including, of course, the Grade II* listed Ice Factory. This area is the most important representation of industrial scale fishing trade in the UK, according to Historic England. It should be treated as one of Grimsby’s important heritage assets.
The Victorian Society has launched a petition to NELC to designate the Kasbah a conservation area, which will mean that any further demolition plans will have to go through full planning applications rather than permitted development. View the petition here:
