Younger people and digital – good for your organisation?
I’ve just been reading an article recounting yet again the digital challenge that faces our voluntary and charitable sector. The way many organisations have always done things needs a change and potentially should be embracing more and more digital or technology powered solutions.
The article posed a potential solution in the form of getting more younger people (who are allegedly more comfortable and capable with all things digital) involved with the leadership and management of voluntary sector organisations.
The second problem is the acute shortage of younger people (18-25years) on charity boards or voluntary organisation committees or social enterprise boards.
So perhaps a reason (if needed) to encourage a younger person to join your committee or board could be to tap into the potential digital skill set that they could bring. Remember it’s also not all about years of experience. Younger people have a different approach, outlook or mindset when it comes to digital technologies (amongst many other things), so their perspectives could be an invaluable wake-up call for your organisation.
VANEL are pleased that with Big Lottery Awards for All money we’ll be pushing ahead with our “Young Leaders” project this year. So if you are a board and interested in getting younger people onboard, or you are a younger person yourself, or you just are interested in digital or governance issues then do get in touch with us.
