ONE hundred hours of volunteering – former health and safety professional John Jacques is putting his vast career experience to good use for the benefit of others.

John, who has enjoyed a variety of professional roles during his working life, only started volunteering in October and has already completed his century!

Supported into the sector by the team at VANEL, John has been found a role to support his skills – as a housing manager for a local trust, liaising between the management and residents.

“There are a whole host of requests that come from the residents and a large part of my role is assessing what they are asking for and helping the trust to look at what can be done. I do enjoy it, and it has done wonders for my confidence – it has got me talking to people again too,” said John.

The 64-year-old is currently recovering from a bout of ill-health and is now looking to get back into paid work. He has previously enjoyed successful careers in the leisure industry, adult education, the care sector and in the health & safety profession.

“There is no doubt that I, like many people, have built up many skills over the years, but you tend to forget how much you do actually know and can offer. Volunteering helps to remind you and prepares you for your next move, I would certainly recommend it to anyone in my position,” added John.
