£10,000 awarded to help socially isolated adults in North East Lincolnshire

Local charity, the Gardiner Hill Foundation which supports people with mental health problems has been granted a £10,000 National Lottery Award to help combat social isolation in vulnerable adults in North East Lincolnshire.

The project called ‘Only the Lonely’ aims to help people who, for a number of reasons, which may include bereavement, job loss, anti-social behaviour, lack of public transport and even internet connectivity issues, are experiencing social isolation. Working in partnership with Voluntary Action North East Lincolnshire (VANEL) the Gardiner Hill Foundation will initially undertake research in areas that have been recognised as particularly isolating such as local villages and rural communities as well as specific areas in Cleethorpes and Immingham.

The project will look into activities that are already available and consider how the Gardiner Hill Foundation can make them more accessible for individuals as well as developing new activities that will benefit individuals’ mental health, such as singing, amateur dramatics and story sharing as well as trips out to beach huts, garden centres and other local attractions.

The organisation will also seek to involve people recovering from mental health issues and those who have themselves overcome loneliness and isolation as volunteers as we know they understand each other and will be empathetic.

Tom Hunter, Chairman of the Gardiner Hill Foundation said, “The people we come in to contact with as a charity, have raised concerns about increasing feelings of loneliness and isolation and having listened to those concerns we wanted to do something about it.”

“With this grant we will look to bring people together to help reduce social isolation, thereby improving mental wellbeing and will be involving members of the targeted communities throughout the development of the project to ensure their voices are heard and needs are met.”

Gardiner Hill Foundation are very grateful for the support from Big Lottery through the Awards for All fund which will enable them to undertake the very important work for their benefit of our clients.
