Governance Weekly for 2nd March
The weekly roundup from VANEL on good governance, charity trusteeship and non-profit leadership. News, information, resources and ideas. Complemented by our monthly “View from the Top” e-newsletter (Trustee Network members only), our “aboutgovernance” online discussion space for leaders and trustees and our @aboutgovernance Twitter feed.
It’s time for NCVO’s monthly Governance Roundup for February. Read it in full here. There’s information about the new Charity Governance Code consultation (which has just closed), some fundraising guidance for charities and a heads-up that the government will be introducing a draft Charities Bill in the summer, which could be of significance for us all. Have a read of their blog.
Also from NCVO recently is the publication of their annual “Road Ahead” study which takes a look at the operating environment our organisations will be working in during 2017. A blog about this is here with links to the summary and, if you are NCVO members, to the full report.
Places are still available on our governance course next week in Grimsby. “Induction and Refresher Training for Trustees” is on Wed 8th March, 3-5pm at VANEL offices, Grimsby. £10 per person (£15 non-members, or free for trustees aged under 30). Contact karl@vanel.org.uk if you need a place for your newer trustees.
Also,”Technology for Trustees” is on Friday 10th March, 10-11.30am at VANEL offices. £5pp (£10pp non-members).
Our Reaching Communities funded youth leadership programme – IGNITE – has a Steering Group comprising of younger people who will help oversee the programme from their perspective. We need more willing young people to get on board. If you are aged 18-30 and looking for a leadership role, then contact Chris at VANEL, chris@vanel.org.uk and he’ll have a chat with you about the opportunity.
Finally this week, a challenging and thought provoking piece from the Guardian’s Voluntary Sector Network. Is charity governance even fit for purpose these days? Do volunteer trustee boards make sense? Have a read & we’d be interested to have your thoughts. If you are part of the VANEL Trustees Network then you can pop over to About Governance – www.vanel.org.uk/aboutgovernance – to join in the discussion about this and other topics. If you are not yet part of the Network, contact Karl to discuss.
Finally, finally: you’ll have noticed that “The View from the Top” hasn’t been out for the last couple of months. Sorry about that. It wasn’t my intention, but it wasn’t getting the time I wanted to spend on it. I’m also doing a full review of what “The View from the Top” should be. I’ve had good feedback about it, but the readership is currently small and I’m unsure what trustees really want from the e-newsletter. So whilst I look into this, it’s on pause. Watch this space and I hope it will be resuurected very shortly. Any of your own thoughts on this? Contact me or discuss on AboutGov.
