Become a Befriender Through VANEL’s Volunteer Centre
Becoming a befriender is without a doubt one of the most rewarding volunteering opportunities available.
Befrienders are ordinary people who give up their time to help improve the lives of vulnerable people. They do this by offering them support, encouragement and a listening ear. There are many benefits to becoming a befriender, for both the befriender and the person that they are befriending. Befriending provides companionship for isolated people, the chance to develop a new relationship, and opportunities to participate in social activities.
When people hear the term ‘befriender’ they often think of befriending older people. Whilst befrienders can and do work with older people, there are many other groups of people that befrienders work with. Befriending can take many forms. You can work as a befriender over the phone, face to face or as part of a group.
In the majority of cases, you can only become a befriender if you are aged 18 or over and may be subject to a DBS.
