WebClub past sessions

WebClub started back in May 2011 and has been meeting approximately every two weeks ever since.

Below is a chronology and archive of our 2011 and 2012 meetings.

2012

21 Nov – EventBrite, Disqus, image preparation and a good chunk of project troubleshooting for members
6 Nov – communication tools, discussions and emails. coding and homepage design.
23 Oct – in-depth look at design techniques using WordPress themes. “Under the bonnet” look at Themes and how they work.
9 Oct – focus again on design work and troubleshooting of member websites.
26 Sept – Facebook. social media discussions. General web design interaction & project troubleshooting.
11 Sept – general troubleshooting of member websites
14 August – a connected web  – looking at using online tools to connect everything together (plus member project troubleshooting)
31 July – Mailchimp, copying and reinstalling WordPress, project troubleshooting
25 June – Troubleshooting session.  We investigated (and solved) a range of issues with member website projects.
13 June – Websites and the new Cookie law session.
22 May – Design inspiration session.  Reviewing good and bad design with lots of inspiration. Looking at key components of design – layout, colour, fonts, images, overall appearance etc. Looking at tools and approaches and ways of ensuring our websites are well designed.
9 May – Theme: Security of websites – protecting websites against spam, hacking and attack. Protecting data securely and dealing with data protection.  Dealing with user access and vulnerabilities. Backups.  We’ll focus on practical application within WordPress, but the subject will be applicable to all websites.
24 Apr – Coding and Programming session followed by normal discussions around group projects and troubleshooting.
11 Apr – new attendees so we covered basics of web development, spend time on troubleshooting our projects and looked in more depth at graphics, images and preparing logos and backgrounds.
20 Mar – general project troubleshooting, overview of WordPress for a new member, tutorials around making the most of WordPress custom post types
7 Mar – review and troubleshooting our projects, minimum viable product discussion, focus on wordpress layouts
23 Feb – google analytics, project troubleshooting, overview of hosting admin control panels
7 Feb – project troubleshooting mostly
24 Jan – back to basics discussion on web development and walthroughs of WordPress projects.
10 Jan – new format meeting for 2012 with focus on web development projects as case studies. tips & troubleshooting session too.


2011

13 Dec – we had another hands-on web troubleshooting session in the IT lab
30 Nov – another session looking closely at website design & tackling members questions
14 Nov – some introductory discussion for new members and a run through of the principles of graphically designing and laying out a website
17 Oct – user management techniques
5 Oct – handon session in IT suite on WordPress and Moonfruit
20 Sept – general discussion session around hosting and web construction techniques
5 Sept – a repeat of the admin control panel session from 15 Aug, but included some one to one WordPress tuition for the attendees
15 Aug – detailed walkthrough of buying domains and hostings and understanding hosting admin control panels
2 Aug – a hands on workshop trying out WordPress
18 July – social media tools and integrating them with websites, troubleshooting Q&A
4 July – revisited basic html, review of many basic tools and techniques for getting a website up and running quickly
27 June – sessions on preparing and using images in websites + measuring visitors and using analytics
6 June – anatomy of a website in detail, webtools, troubleshooting Q&A session, basics of HTML
23 May – introductory session, planning WebClub, project managing a web project, understanding the basic components of a website, anatomy of a website, common tools and techniques, design issues checklist
