Have your say on the proposed Coastal Path through Cleethorpes

The England Coast Path is a grand plan to create a walking route that goes around the entire coast of England joining all seafronts and coastal towns and villages together in one continuous walking route.

We have been waiting to see the plans for the route that will take the Coast Path through Cleethorpes, and these have finally become available. The public consultation is now open.

We first blogged about the Coastal Path in general here.

Full information about our local section of the path and the process for commenting and responding to the consultation can be found here:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/england-coast-path-from-mablethorpe-to-the-humber-bridge-comment-on-proposals

The whole section is MABLETHORPE to HUMBER BRIDGE. Our local part is MHB3 : HUMBERSTON to IMMINGHAM DOCKS.

Start by looking at the general overview here or the map here. All the local details including detailed maps are in the NHB3 overview here.

The opportunity to comment closes at midnight, Wednesday 7 July 2021. All the information about commenting etc is on the main webpage here.

New FitRoute walking routes setup in Cleethorpes

Across North East Lincolnshire a range of new FitRoutes have been created. They encourage people to walk, exercise and explore. Each can be accessed by maps, websites, walking route apps and so on, and all are physically marked on their routes.

A couple of these routes are in Cleethorpes. In particular the Candy Floss Canter taking you from North Promenade down along the prom and then the Meridian Meander further down the south of the resort.

Visit the FitRoute website here and find out more about how Tape2Tape and the Council have been setting up these routes here.

The North Promenade Palm Trees are back

In 2020 Big Local North Cleethorpes invested in funding eight potted palm trees along North Promenade. They’ve now been away for the Winter and are now back out along the Prom. We hope when you visit you agree that they make an attractive addition to the Promenade.
Back in 2018 and 2019 Big Local North Cleethorpes part-funded bedding plant planters along the prom, sharing the costs with the local businesses. But in 2020, with the pandemic in full flow and businesses struggling to open, Big Local decided to take this different approach and to 100% fund the palm trees which will now come back year after year.
Thank you to the grounds team at North East Lincolnshire Council who do the maintenance of the palm trees and put them out and take them away on behalf of Big Local.
Go visit North Prom for a walk and take a selfie in front of a Cleethorpes Palm Tree! #cleethorpespalmtrees #greenrouteclee. Visit the local businesses while you’re down there – they’ll appreciate your custom.

A virtual Cleethorpes Low Tide trail

Not strictly ‘green’, but if you’re walking and exploring the sea front around Cleethorpes Pier then here’s a completely different way of looking at some features around the area.
Visit this webpage (from your mobile phone is good whilst you’re out walking) to find out about some of the features of interest around the area.
It’s an interactive trail showing you some interesting features including the onshore Ross Castle folly, but very interestingly some of the offshore features including the submerged forest! Not safe to get to so have a look via the online tour and then have a read of this article which explains more about the forest.
Does a forest count as Green Cleethorpes even if it’s been dead and buried for thousands of years?
Visit the tour here.
Read about the forest here.

The England Coast Path. We’re part of something bigger

The England Coast Path is a grand plan to create a walking route that goes around the entire coast of England joining all seafronts and coastal towns and villages together in one continuous walking route.
It’s a long time in the making and parts of the route are being adopted a bit at a time.

Of course Cleethorpes will become part of this route too.

Cleethorpes is part of the section known as the “Mablethorpe to Humber Bridge” segment (see photo). Our stage is still in the planning stages and we’re waiting for the route to be discussed or shared or put out for consultation.

Going through Cleethorpes, some of this walking route is going to be pretty easy and obvious – walking the length of the promenades through the resort for example. But when it gets the docks and ABP land it might get more interesting.

At this stage we’re just sharing information about the route so that when there is something more substantive to discuss everyone can get involved.

So here is some useful information about the England Coastal Path:

An overview of the whole England Coastal Path project is here.
Updates about our stretch of path are here. And here about the rest of the North of England.

It’s time to explore Green Cleethorpes

It’s Spring; the weather is improving; restrictions are lifting; so now is a great time to get out and start walking and cycling around Cleethorpes and enjoying some of the green spaces and places the area has to offer.

The walking route maps we produced as part of our Heritage funded project are now ready to collect, so please use them as an excuse to get walking! More about the maps here and the route here.

The Cycle Hub on Cleethorpes railway station has reopened, so that’s an excuse to hire a bike and explore green spaces further afield. Find out more from the Cycle Hub website here or their Facebook page here. We’ve also set up some ideas about local cycling routes, but why not create your own?

And if you’re just looking for space to meet up with people outside (now that this is permitted), then explore the green parks and space around North Cleethorpes and maybe meet somewhere different to normal (Sidney Park, Sussex Recreation ground, Trinity open space, Haverstoe Park, Dolphin or Pier Gardens?). Use this site to read more about their heritage before you go.

Enjoy Green North Cleethorpes

Grab a map and explore Green Cleethorpes

We made a map of the green spaces and places in North Cleethorpes and joined them all together with a couple of different walking routes.
You can download the map here and find out about the walking route here, but most importantly, you can now pick up a printed map for yourself for when you’re out exploring.

The maps are at the VANEL offices and Big Local North Cleethorpes community hub at 82 Grimsby Road, Cleethorpes. We’re only open for limited hours on a Wednesday so it’s best to contact us in advance at the moment (01472 897337, karl@vanel.org.uk). Or, if you live in North Cleethorpes, let us have your address and we’ll pop a map through your letter box. The maps will also be distributed to various venues around Cleethorpes over the coming weeks – keep an eye out for them.

Either way, enjoy exploring North Cleethorpes!

Suggitts Lane accessible footbridge gets go ahead for 2021

After a long battle by residents, funding has been found and agreement has been reached for a new, accessible footbridge to be build over the railway at the end of Suggitts Lane.
The crossing has been closed for safety reasons for a long time now and this has cut off North Promenade from the Grimsby Road side of the line and interrupted walking and cycling routes that connect these parts of town. So it’s welcome news to hear that a way to cross will once again be in place before the end of 2021.
All the plans and images are available now on the NELC website where they are available for public comment and consultation. Visit the consultation page here.
The public feedback survey closes on 26th March 2021 – make sure you complete it here.
We’ll keep an eye on this project as it progresses as it will fundamentally change the way people can navigate around the town. Access the Cycle Hub at the station and to the promenade shopping and for exercise will be simple again. And as the ‘pocket park’ at the rear of North Beach slowly evolves, this extra route which will be accessible to more people than the Fuller Street footbridge will be a welcome addition.
Watch this space.

Operation Gateway will help to make the route between Grimsby and Cleethorpes more attractive

Little more than a century ago, Grimsby and Cleethorpes were separated by open land. The land slowly developed joining the communities together, and the main route – Grimsby Road – was built up. In those early days Grimsby Road was a wide avenue with trees and tramlines as can be seen in the image(s) below.

Welcome to Cleethorpes along Grimsby Road in 1936

Grimsby Road is still wide and tree-lined in a way, but along its length is a very mixed affair of appearance.

A NELC initiative announced in 2020 will work along Grimsby Road and make effort to work with premises owners to improve the appearance of this main route into Cleethorpes.

Read the original announcement about Operation Gateway here.

Operation Gateway will work in four stages and is now underway. We’re particularly interested in the stages that go through Sidney Sussex and Croft Baker wards until they reach Issacs Hill.

This is an opportunity for greening the street scene too and we hope that some planting and natural features will be incorporated as the project proceeds. Local partners such as VANEL and Big Local North Cleethorpes will be actively discussing progress with the Council and of course residents and property owners from Riby Square to Issacs Hill will be very involved.

A positive programme to help revitalise this major route into Cleethorpes.

Update (March 2021): a bit of a progress update about the project before it gets to Cleethorpes. Read about it here.

Plans for growing and gardening at Big Local Community Hub

Big Local North Cleethorpes is a resident led, 10 year funded programme to make North Cleethorpes a better place to live and work. A couple of years ago a community hub opened at 82 Grimsby Road, and was then rapidly closed due to covid-19! But when the Hub reopens (as permitted), there’s a new addition in the back yard.

A large, red, super shed has been built and is underway to open properly mid 2021. This large space will allow members of the public to get involved with all kinds of practical skills (making, creating or mending things).

You can watch progress on this project (and everything else Big Local is up to) on their website – www.biglocalnorthcleethorpes.org.uk

Importantly, there is space in the yard around the shed and Big Local are looking for ways to put planters in place and get things growing in the yard. One of the committee members received a Green Grow Box earlier in 2020 from a local project and has now planted things up in his garden ready to replant at the community hub by the shed when the time is right. You can watch Alan on the video on YouTube here.

This is a simple of example of some urban gardening. Take a bare piece of land and get something growing there. Have you got examples of this in Cleethorpes? Would you like to do some growing like this yourself?

We’d like to hear from you.

(And we’ll share more about the shed growing project later in 2021).
