World Toilet Day This Saturday!

Join VANEL’s IGNITE team, in partnership with Anglian Water, this Saturday at People’s Park from 11am until 2pm for World Toilet Day 2016! World Toilet Day is a UN lead initiative which aims to raise awareness of the global sanitation crisis, and work towards creating a world in which everyone, everywhere, has access to a toilet by 2030.

Each day as many as 2.4 billion people in countries in the developing world go about their day to day lives without the ‘luxury’ of a toilet. Today, 1 billion people worldwide will be denied one of their most basic human rights, the right to water and sanitation. They will wake up and have to face the very real indignity of defecating in the open, and in the process, put themselves at risk of catching a disease or becoming the victim of sexual assault.

Anglian Water’s ‘Keep it Clear’ campaign is designed to educate and inform people about the kind of things that should and shouldn’t be put down the drain or toilet – such as fats, oils and grease, or wipes and sanitary waste – and the reasons why.
Community Engagement Manager Collette Parker said: “Our Keep it Clear programme aims to increase awareness of the wider issues surrounding improper waste disposal and encourages people to make small changes which can make a big difference.  What better way to do this and highlight the global issues of poor sanitation than with a spot of toilet Olympics”.

VANEL’s World Toilet Day event will include a mummification and colouring contest, toilet roll ten-pin bowling, photobooth and the launch of the O2 funded ‘Explorabubble!’ Explorabubble will provide adults and children alike with the opportunity to express themselves using bubbles as an artistic medium which is fun, educational and therapeutic. We will have a bubble machine, giant bubble wands and an array of different bubble-themed activities!

We hope to see as many people at WTD as possible, and hope that you are as excited about World Toilet Day and bubbles as we are.
