Nominations for ‘The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service’

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service’, the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK, is now open for nominations. The annual award recognises and rewards excellence in voluntary activities carried out by groups in the community. First announced in 2002 as part of the celebrations for The Queen’s Golden Jubilee, the award is given for outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers who regularly devote their time to helping others in the community, improving the quality of life and opportunity for others as well as providing an outstanding service.

A group is classed as two or more people who have been doing voluntary work for three years or more. To be eligible for nomination, the group should undertake work that provides a service and meets a need for people living in the local community and is recognised and supported by that community. Anyone in the UK can nominate a group for the award, including those who directly benefit from the group’s activities. Paid members of staff and volunteers cannot nominate their own group for the award. This is to ensure that nominations are independent and supported. The deadline for nominations to the 2017 Awards is midnight on Friday 16th September 2016.

Winners are announced each year on the anniversary of Her Majesty’s Coronation, June 2nd, and will receive a certificate signed by the Queen and a domed glass crystal. Representatives from the group may also be invited to attend a royal garden party.
