Profile
The critic Mel Gooding described Stephen Newton’s paintings as a ‘psycho- conceptual project’. It is a reference to the deep and all embracing theoretical dynamic that informs all Stephen’s work in the visual arts but is particularly relevant to his paintings, where the physical application of paint layers to a surface is an integral ingredient and essential to the whole experience.
Stephen’s paintings, heavy with impasto, are almost notebooks to the psychological and intellectual journey the artist takes to arrive at a radically distilled imagery, whereupon simple- even childlike – iconographies represent a far more primeval, creative force that stir (often uncomfortable) sensations of recognition in those that take the time to consider and reflect on them.
