{"id":4006,"date":"2014-11-14T15:35:57","date_gmt":"2014-11-14T15:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vanel.org.uk\/va\/?p=4006"},"modified":"2014-11-14T15:35:57","modified_gmt":"2014-11-14T15:35:57","slug":"encouraging-and-supporting-young-trustees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vanel.org.uk\/va\/2014\/11\/encouraging-and-supporting-young-trustees\/","title":{"rendered":"Encouraging and supporting Young Trustees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>National Trustees\u2019 Week<\/strong> is drawing to a close and <strong>VANEL\u2019s five days of Trusteeship and Governance related events<\/strong> are now finished. Thanks to everyone who attended or supported one of our events. Feedback has been positive and we\u2019ve had discussions across the week that have helped us teach and learn in equal measures.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday we help our<strong> \u201cYoung Trustees Wanted\u201d<\/strong> workshop from which we\u2019ve lots of issues and ideas to take forward.<\/p>\n<p>We learned even more about the gap between young people and charity boards and about some of the issues that need to be addressed to get everyone to come together.<\/p>\n<p>Younger people need to know more about Trusteeship \u2013 what it is, what it involves, how to get started, how to find an opportunity, how to be supported and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Charities and groups need to change their approaches \u2013 the way their business is conducted could be more \u2018young people friendly\u2019. And an attitude shift is probably required to get boards to embrace the idea of getting younger people on board (lack of years of experience does not mean lack of passion, capability, enthusiasm, perspective, energy and value!).<\/p>\n<p>And where young people do become Trustees or take up leadership positions, then support needs to be there to help them thrive and grow into those roles. The benefits are then there for everyone \u2013 the charities and the young people alike.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we\u2019ve been reading:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Charity Commission report into Young Trustees \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/vanel.org.uk\/va\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/a-breath-of-fresh-air.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cA Breath of Fresh Air\u201d<\/a> \u2013 is vital reading.<\/li>\n<li>Everything on the <a href=\"http:\/\/trusteesweek.blogspot.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Trustees\u2019 Week blog<\/a> is interesting \u2013 especially the <a href=\"http:\/\/trusteesweek.blogspot.co.uk\/p\/trustees-stories.html\" target=\"_blank\">Trustees\u2019s stories<\/a> section. There\u2019s even a story from Grimsby\u2019s own <a href=\"http:\/\/trusteesweek.blogspot.com\/2011\/10\/leon-wards-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Leon Ward<\/a> in there.<\/li>\n<li>We liked <a href=\"https:\/\/alexswallow.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/28\/how-to-become-a-young-trustee\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Swallows podcast<\/a> on why young people should become Trustees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Some news<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.growinggiving.org.uk\/latest-news\/young-trustee-survey\" target=\"_blank\">The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) is running a Young Trustee Survey<\/a>, which will feed into a guide CAF is producing on engaging young trustees. &#8216;Young&#8217; is defined for the guide as anyone aged between 18 and 30. The survey asks for input on experiences and difficulties of organisations engaging young people as trustees.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk\/Building-generation-young-trustees\/story-24532964-detail\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">more about this on the Grimsby Telegraph<\/a> too, as Leon Ward is fronting this as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.growinggiving.org.uk\/young-trustees\" target=\"_blank\">The survey is here<\/a> and we\u2019d like to encourage anyone who thinks this is a worthwhile issue to spend the time contributing to the survey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At <strong>VANEL<\/strong> we\u2019re looking for ways to move forward in supporting younger trustees. If you are one of those people blessed still with your youth, then we\u2019d like to know you\u2019re interested.
