VANEL and National Get Online Week 2013<\/h2>\n

The week starting Monday 14th October is national Get Online Week.\u00a0 VANEL is a firm believer that each and every voluntary and community organisation in North East Lincolnshire should be familiar with the latest technology, be encouraged to make the most of it, and provided with opportunities to make efficient and effective use of digital technologies.\u00a0 So, using Get Online Week as an excuse, we\u2019re hosting a number of technology focussed sessions over a couple of days which any of our Members and Friends are invited to attend.<\/p>\n

Everything will take place at the VANEL offices at the Elms (22 Abbey Road, Grimsby).<\/p>\n

All sessions are free unless marked otherwise, but room space will be limited, so booking is essential. Please let me know if you are wanting to attend any of the sessions.\u00a0 The week is essentially a \u2018non-conference\u2019 so there are a range of different sessions that you may attend \u2013 you don\u2019t need to come for the whole event.\u00a0 Please let me know exactly which sessions you will be available for.<\/p>\n

If space is very limited we may need to restrict attendees to one per organisation.\u00a0 In any case, attendees must be staff or volunteers from VANEL Members and Friends organisations.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no lunches or food available (we\u2019re not funded for this), but we\u2019ll have tea and coffee available.<\/p>\n

Tuesday 15th<\/h2>\n

9.30am \u2013 10.15am \u2013 session 1<\/strong>
\n\u201cThe Voluntary and Community Sector and the Digital by Default environment\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/strong>Keynote presentation and discussion to kick off our Get Online week by Karl Elliott.<\/p>\n

Why is technology so important? What are the barriers we are trying to overcome? What can we all do with technology right now to make what we do better or do better things?\u00a0 What is the future going to look like (and it\u2019s just around the corner)?\u00a0 How can we all avoid being left behind?<\/p>\n

10.30am \u2013 11.30am \u2013 session 2<\/strong>
\nGood Ideas Workshop<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019ll share all our favourite technical tools, tips and techniques.\u00a0 We\u2019ll share how we and others have been using technology to do a lot of things that little bit better.\u00a0 And we hope you\u2019ll contribute to the discussions to share your own tips and ideas.<\/p>\n

This workshop is a great chance for everyone to share ideas and learn from each other about the great ways technology can help us all.<\/p>\n

11.30am \u2013 1pm \u2013 session 3<\/strong>
\nTechnical Surgeries session<\/strong><\/p>\n

A chance for a very informal chat about a range of technical topics.\u00a0 So if you have questions or want to learn a bit more then we\u2019ll have a number of VANEL\u2019s technically competent staff hanging around to talk to you or demonstrate ideas.<\/p>\n

So if you\u2019ve been to the morning workshops, hang around for the Surgeries session to ask your questions.\u00a0 Or if you can\u2019t get along earlier, why not pop into the Surgeries to find ideas to help you.
\nDuring the surgeries there will be staff on hand to specifically deal with:<\/p>\n

– Technology in general \u2013 hardware, software, networks etc. The nuts and bolts of your day to day technology.
\n– \u201cPC\u2019s are not your only option\u201d \u2013 explore different technical ideas \u2013 Mac\u2019s, Linux, Chromebooks, tablets, mobile etc
\n– \u201cMeet Asana\u201d \u2013 Asana is one of our favourite tools of the moment.\u00a0 You could use it too.\u00a0 Have a chat about how it works.
\n–\u00a0\u201cA slice of Raspberry Pi\u201d \u2013 a \u00a335 computer? What is it? How can it be used? Myths vs reality? Would it be useful for your organisation? Get hands-on.
\n– Social Media surgery \u2013 Facebook, Twitter, Pintrest, Vine, LinkedIn, Tumblr.\u00a0 What do you use? Do you have questions? Come and have a chat.<\/p>\n

2pm -2.30pm \u2013 session 4<\/strong>
\nCTX Masterclass<\/strong><\/p>\n

Registered charities can get hold of extraordinarily cheap software via the Charity Technology Exchange Programme.\u00a0 The scheme helps charities save \u00a31000s on software.\u00a0 This masterclass will explain everything you need to know about the scheme and how to access it. If you\u2019re not already using CTX then this free 30 minutes of advice could save you a fortune.<\/p>\n

4pm \u2013 6pm \u2013 session 5<\/strong>
\nWebClub<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is our scheduled fortnightly WebClub session.\u00a0 Members will be there, but non-members are welcome to pop along to this session.\u00a0 WebClub is for those people building or maintaining websites for their own organisations & we provide training, support and advice.<\/p>\n

We use WordPress a lot with our Members and this session will be a review of a lot of the latest tools and techniques that can be useful for WordPress developers.\u00a0 We\u2019ll also be doing our usual troubleshooting of our members web projects.<\/p>\n

Wednesday 16th<\/h2>\n

9.30am \u2013 11.30am \u2013 session 6<\/strong>
\n\u201cCooking up a Website\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our popular, occasional, introduction to the world of websites and web-development.\u00a0 This training session is great for complete beginners to the world of web.\u00a0 We look at all the components of a website, the tools and techniques and the different approaches, in a practical, non-profit oriented approach.\u00a0 Hopefully, everyone leaves with deeper understanding on how websites work and how their own organisation get their web projects started or progressed.<\/p>\n

1pm \u2013 3pm \u2013 session 7<\/strong>
\n \u201cWordPress for Beginners\u201d<\/strong>
\n\u00a35 per person<\/p>\n

This is an intensive two-hour training session introducing all the basics of WordPress as a web development tool. (14% of the world\u2019s websites are built using WordPress, which is essentially free).\u00a0 If you\u2019d like to explore WordPress, then this session will explain everything you need to know about the basics to get you started.
\nPlaces will be very limited for both these training sessions, so please book early.<\/p>\n

Friday\u00a0 18th<\/h2>\n

10am – 12noon \u2013 session 8<\/strong>
\n IT Volunteers wanted \/ offered<\/strong><\/p>\n

We know there are people out there with IT skills that they\u2019d like to put to use. We also know there are plenty of groups with IT needs (but perhaps that can\u2019t properly articulate them).\u00a0 We\u2019re looking into how we can put the two groups together.\u00a0 So we\u2019re inviting people to attend this session from either camp \u2013 those with the skills who\u2019d volunteer them, and groups who think they\u2019d like support.\u00a0 We\u2019ll use the session to help us work out a good way to pair people up.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019d like to get involved or need support, drop in at any time between 10am and noon for a chat.<\/p>\n

You are welcome to come to any parts of the two days of activities.<\/p>\n

Places will be very limited for the specific training sessions and restricted for the other sessions.
\nPlease therefore book in advance \u2013 telling us which session(s) you are expecting to come to.
\nIf sessions are full on the day then we may need to turn away attendees who have not booked.<\/p>\n
