National Volunteers\u2019 Week<\/a> is almost here (1st – 7th June).<\/span> So join VANEL and the IGNITE team on 3rd June<\/strong><\/span> for our World Oceans Day tie in event<\/a> to find out about how volunteers can help the environment. And join us at Grimsby Central Hall on 5th June<\/strong><\/span> for our V:Expo 2018 youth focused volunteering event<\/a>. There\u2019s lots of reasons to be there, so read on.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next week the HYA funding<\/a> closes on 31st May.<\/span> So a reminder to get your application in now. Details below.<\/span><\/p>\n

V:EXPO on 5th June<\/span><\/span><\/h6>\n

Our Youth Conference – V:EXPO – is on 5th June<\/span> at Grimsby Central Hall. A reminder of who we have speaking…<\/strong><\/p>\n

V:Expo North East Lincolnshire will be covering the benefits of youth volunteering from both a young persons perspective and an organisational standpoint.<\/p>\n

We are pleased to welcome Sean Delaney from NCVO <\/strong>who will deliver workshops on the national view on youth, youth leadership and young people in volunteering. More significantly though, he’ll be explaining how GDPR works when a young person turns 18.<\/p>\n

The National Youth Agency<\/strong> will also be in attendance explaining all about their national programmes and grant schemes they currently have open.<\/p>\n

Volunteer Matters<\/strong> will be delivering workshops on their 3 main programmes which are:
\n– Grand Mentors – Inspiring Inter-generational work and skills swapping. Why it’s effective and how we can incorporate it into our practices.
\n– Wassup! A workshop covering sexual abuse and domestic violence and how volunteering can help.
\n– Future Additions: How to work with and the benefits of having youth volunteers with Special Needs.<\/p>\n

Young Advisers <\/strong>will be at the evening session covering Youth Campaigning and the social implications and benefits of the youth voice.<\/p>\n

Steve Lynn and Steve Jones will be delivering a Young People as Problem Solvers<\/strong> workshop.<\/p>\n

Marcus Czarnecki will be delivering organised dialogues covering Youth Leadership<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nNetworking: 17:00 – 18:00
\nEvening Session: 18:00 – 20:00<\/p>\n

The conference is open to all ages..

Don’t forget our other big event during Volunteers’ Week<\/a> – World Oceans Day<\/strong>.\u00a0 World Oceans Day<\/a> itself is 8th June<\/span> 2018, but we’re holding an event<\/a> on Sunday 3rd June<\/span> down in Cleethorpes (Discovery Centre and Beach Hut 9) between 10am & 4pm.\u00a0 We’re also coinciding it with the Big Lunch! So bring a picnic and we’ll be eating together at 12.30. More about the national Big Lunch from the Eden Project here<\/a>. All about our World Oceans Day event here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There are lots of musical and theatrical events planned at Grimsby Central Hall <\/strong>over the coming months. Visit their website here<\/a> for the details. Local investment is always good. So if you\u2019ve not heard about the new Heritage Action Zone in Grimsby, make sure you catch up on the story here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

National News<\/h6>\n

In April, NCVO <\/a>held their annual conference in London. You probably didn\u2019t go, but it\u2019s well worth the time to look through the content from the day. NCVO generously put the keynote talks and all the seminar\/workshop presentations online for you to read. Get to them all here<\/a>. The GDPR workshop is topical, but all the others are relevant. Also it\u2019s worth spending 18minutes watching the keynote speech by Sir Stuart Etherington talking about the state of the sector<\/a>. All worth a watch\/read.<\/p>\n

Funding News<\/span><\/h6>\n

The final round of Humberside Youth Association (HYA) funding <\/strong>closes on 31st May.<\/strong><\/span> If you have an idea of a project to support younger people (or are young yourself) then get your applications in quickly. All the details here<\/a>. Apply via Richard at VANEL.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Crime Reduction Fund (CRF)<\/strong> next closing date is 14th June<\/span>. If you\u2019ve got a project that can tackle crime in ways that align with the funding objectives then you need to get your applications in. Contact Richard at VANEL for information<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A couple of interesting grant schemes which relate to growing and developing your organisation:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Funding to Support the Development of Small Charities and Social Enterprises<\/span><\/strong>
\nFrom the 23rd July 2018, small charities, social enterprises and community interest groups will be able to apply for grants of up to \u00a330,000 plus support to unlock growth, sustainability and efficiency. To qualify applicant organisations will need to have a turnover of less than \u00a3500,000 per year). To apply for funding, organisations must register at the start of each funding round. Numbers for each round are capped and registration are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once the cap is reached, the round is closed. Once successfully registered, organisations are invited to submit a simple application. The funding is being made available through the Fore Trust<\/a> and the closing date will be the 3rd September 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Funding Available to Grow Social Enterprises<\/span><\/strong>
\nSocial Entrepreneurs that want to grow their business can apply for grants of up to \u00a315,000. As well as the funding, social entrepreneurs will have access to a support package that includes 12 months mentoring; expert advice networking with investors, corporate partners and other successful entrepreneurs. To be eligible the applicants needs to aged 16 or over and living in the UK; be the founder of the venture\/organisation and beneficiaries must be UK based. The funding is being made available through the UnLtd Grow IT awards scheme<\/a> and expression of interest need to be submitted by the 1st August 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

And as we particularly like environmental projects at the moment…<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Funding for Local Environmental Projects<\/span><\/strong>
\nSchools and local community groups can apply for funding of up to \u00a32,000 for projects that improve the local physical environment and also benefit the wider community. The Greggs Foundation Environmental Grant Scheme<\/a> is funded by the 5p levy on carrier bag sales in Greggs shops. The type of activities that could be funded include for example a growing project in a local primary school; volunteers who completed litter picking exercises in their local parks or along a local riverbank; an allotment project for people suffering early stages of dementia; and clearing an area of wasteland in an area of high social need to create a community garden; etc. Local organisations based near Greggs shops are given priority. Round 2 is now open and will close at midnight on 22nd June<\/span> 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

GDPR<\/span><\/h6>\n

It’s GDPR day!<\/strong>\u00a0 As of 25th May<\/span> 2018, GDPR is active – replacing the previous Data Protection Act. Are you ready? Hopefully you’re fairly well prepared, but don’t panic. It’s not the end – it’s the start.\u00a0 The Regulator themselves have commented that they are going to be pragmatic about it. If you’re making the effort but make mistakes then they’ll be taking that into account. And remember that they don’t have 1000s of inspectors to start knocking on your door anyway. Make sure you’ve done enough to avoid annoying people whose data you’re processing and there’s minimal chance you’re going to fall foul anyway.<\/p>\n

The NCVO national conference was in April and they’ve published the slideshows from all their workshops including one on GDPR. Go and look through it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And please also read this recent blog post from NCVO – “GDPR: don’t press the delete button just yet<\/a>“.<\/span>\u00a0 This is really important. There is so much ‘interpretation’ happening about GDPR and sometimes we don’t need to just throw it all away!<\/p>\n
