Previously I’ve pointed you towards this “blistering polemic” article<\/a> on the NPC website <\/a>from the Chair of the RNIB.\u00a0 It’s an example of the passion that getting governance right in the charitable sector stirs up.\u00a0 This week there’s another challenging and thought provoking article for you to consider.<\/p>\n

“Two years on from Kids Company, it’s time to decide if charities are worth saving”<\/strong><\/a> on the Guardian Voluntary Sector Network<\/a> is well worth a read.<\/p>\n

These articles are designed to get us thinking.\u00a0 Too often our approach to governance and leadership in the sector is pretty much ‘business as usual’.\u00a0 There’s always short term thinking and planning, often medium term planning but far less often, long-term planning.\u00a0 But we owe it to ourselves, our organisations and our beneficiaries to occasionally look far into the future and consider what it means.<\/p>\n

This is not all ‘pie in the sky’ thinking.\u00a0 Only recently, Scope – a large national charity<\/span> – made a really big step to stop being a charity and to become a “social purpose business” in a step that completely changes it’s approach to governance.\u00a0 So these changes are possible. (Read more about this here<\/a>.)\u00a0 If they can do it, should others?<\/p>\n

So, amongst all the day to day hassles and the short term reactive work and medium term proactive work, do you and your board need to step well back and think long term into the future and decide how to proceed?<\/p>\n
