VANEL are working to support North East Lincolnshire Council’s Safer and Stronger Communities team with their Bygone Beachcomber Project<\/p>\n

In 2016, graduate’s working as part of The North East Lincolnshire Safer and Stronger Communities Partnership, identified Cleethorpes Beach Chalets as being an iconic feature of the resort, having adorned Marine Embankment for more than half a century. As a result, an idea was put forward to use a reminiscence project to turn one of the beach chalets\/huts into a seaside heritage museum, complete with an accompanying website entitled ‘Bygone Beachcombers’. The project focuses on recording the history of seaside visits and holidays over the last three centuries, as well as documenting the changing environmental landscape of Cleethorpes.<\/p>\n

Last year VANEL Member organisation Capacity Buildings Ltd, on behalf of NELC’s Safer and Stronger Communities, acquired a lease for Beach Chalet #9<\/a> for a period of five years, starting from August 1st<\/sup>. Since then, and following a \u00a31,500 donation from the Tribune Trust, Beach Hut #9 has been transformed from a tired and disused old beach hut, into a vibrant community hub in which visitors can seek respite and learn about local heritage. As part of this, the team have installed cabinets where they can display memorabilia, souvenirs, posters and photographs which chronicle the history of Cleethorpes.<\/p>\n

The Safer and Stronger Communities team are still in the process of collecting historical artefacts and memorabilia to store within the beach hut and are launching an appeal to the public for donations. If you are in possession of any memorabilia, souvenirs or literature which helps to paint a picture of Cleethorpes over the last three centuries, please get in touch. Alternatively, and if you would prefer, you can lend us your memorabilia, and have it returned to you upon request.
