“The View from the Top”

In October I launched “The View from the Top” – our e-newsletter that covers all things governance and trusteeship related and goes direct to trustees and committee members across our membership. Well, the second issue – January 2016 – has just gone out too. And if you received your copy then I hope it’s interesting and useful to you. I’d love to have your feedback (karl@vanel.org.uk).

This second issue included news from last November’s Trustee Week and Trustee Conference, asked questions about board diversity and pressure on trustees to do too much and took a good look at a number of important recent publications related to Trusteeship. The ‘Challenge’ column looked at resources to differentiate between good and bad trustees and posed some questions to ask yourself and your board. A longer article explored the recent “Wired to Govern” report which highlights the need for trustees to get very involved with technology and another article touched on using the “Governance Wheel” to support your board through development and improvements. A quick overview of the “Code of Good Governance” for those less familiar with it and an overview of the training and support offer from VANEL rounded off this issue.

If you didn’t receive a copy and your organisation is a Member or Friend of VANEL then let me know and I’ll add you to the email mailing list. Or you could speak to your Chair – with a bit of luck they have received it from us already. It only goes out electronically for cost and efficiency reasons, so please speak to your Chair or management if you need a copy.

Next issue of “The View from the Top” is out in February, and in the meantime if you have any questions about support for your board or tackling Trustee related issues then please contact me – Karl Elliott (karl@vanel.org.uk, 01472 361043).
