Neighbours connect and support each other to tackle issues related to crime or safety in their local area.

Neighbourhood Watch groups usually connect to the Police and other local support, and can do anything from tackling a local crime wave to watching out for vulnerable neighbours through to simply organising social events to bring neighbours together.

You could join an existing group or start a new Neighbourhood Watch Group with your neighbours to help improve your area. A group has a Coordinator and often a committee. It often has formal members and households in a specific area such as part of a street or a cul-de-sac or block of apartments. And some of those members might volunteer to connect with others, run projects or errands, liaise with the Police and so on. But usually all the other residents in that area are also ‘covered’ by the group and can be reassured that their area is more active in preventing crime and supporting their neighbours.

Across Humberside there are four local representatives covering each local authority area and these administrators and their organisations can support new and existing groups in those areas. Together these four areas and the administrators meet as Humberwatch to share information and support each other.

To use the Neighbourhood Watch name, logo and branding, residents need to formalise their Neighbourhood Watch group through their local administrator. But if you can bring people together in your neighbourhood then Neighbourhood Watch is an excellent way to improve community safety for yourselves.

Neighbourhood Watch is a collaborative approach too. Groups work with the Police; ward councillors; local agencies and community organisations and others as appropriate to help improve an area.
National information about Neighbourhood Watch can be found at www.ourwatch.org.uk

Across Humberside you can contact someone about Neighbourhood Watch locally:

Hull – local charity Neighbourhood Network leads on Neighbourhood Watch.
