They are cheap, easy to get hold of and easy to fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Get it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is recommended to get an alarm with a 10 year sealed battery unit. The full unit will need to be replaced within 10 years. Standard battery alarms are the cheapest option, but you need to replace the battery every year. Look for the BS 5446 British Standard number and the Kitemark on your alarm. There are also specialist smoke alarms on the market to help if you have hearing or sight issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Install it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fit a smoke alarm to the ceiling on every level of your home. You should avoid putting them in the kitchens and bathrooms. Keep them clean and clear of dust. If you are renting, speak to your landlord to ensure your alarms are properly installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Test it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make time for your home\u2019s unsung heroes and test your smoke alarms once a week.
