Operation Gateway will help to make the route between Grimsby and Cleethorpes more attractive

Little more than a century ago, Grimsby and Cleethorpes were separated by open land. The land slowly developed joining the communities together, and the main route – Grimsby Road – was built up. In those early days Grimsby Road was a wide avenue with trees and tramlines as can be seen in the image(s) below.

Grimsby Road is still wide and tree-lined in a way, but along its length is a very mixed affair of appearance.

A NELC initiative announced in 2020 will work along Grimsby Road and make effort to work with premises owners to improve the appearance of this main route into Cleethorpes.

Read the original announcement about Operation Gateway here.

Operation Gateway will work in four stages and is now underway. We’re particularly interested in the stages that go through Sidney Sussex and Croft Baker wards until they reach Issacs Hill.

This is an opportunity for greening the street scene too and we hope that some planting and natural features will be incorporated as the project proceeds. Local partners such as VANEL and Big Local North Cleethorpes will be actively discussing progress with the Council and of course residents and property owners from Riby Square to Issacs Hill will be very involved.

A positive programme to help revitalise this major route into Cleethorpes.

Update (March 2021): a bit of a progress update about the project before it gets to Cleethorpes. Read about it here.
