Julia Unwin (Chief Executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation) gave a speech at the Charity Trustee Network back in 2007, that is as relevant today as it was then.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every Trustee or Committee Member should take a few minutes to read it through.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Julia<\/a> considered the issue \u2013 What questions Trustees should ask<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

She turned this into three questions:
\n– why are we here?
\n– who are we?
\n– what are we doing?<\/p>\n

Her answers are deep reaching and I believe every committee, board and trustee should be asking these questions (regularly?) to ensure that they are keeping on purpose, understand their roles and are making their governance practices the very best they can be.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve long suggested groups ask themselves the 5 S\u2019s \u2013 Stretch, Support, Strategy, Scrutiny and Stewardship<\/strong>.\u00a0 These five S\u2019s come out clearly in Julia\u2019s speech.\u00a0 I\u2019m using these with boards I work with, and I find them effective.\u00a0 You should too.<\/p>\n

But I think if you also ask yourself \u2013 who are we? \u2013 and put your answers into the contexts she outlines in the talk, then you\u2019ll be better equipped to know yourself and your board.<\/p>\n
