Happy New Year to you, your staff, trustees and volunteers.<\/strong> At VANEL we\u2019re just getting ourselves ready for 2019 and starting our plans for the year ahead. Have you sorted your new year resolutions yet for how your group\/organisation is going to approach 2019? Why not make one of your resolutions to aim to \u2018rock the boat\u2019? Don\u2019t just head into 2019 full steam ahead doing the same as before. Why not tackle something new, different, experimental or simply take a look at how you do things and try and make improvements? We\u2019ve got a couple of ideas for new year resolutions in our blog here<\/a>. Don\u2019t forget that VANEL is here to help you. So if you\u2019re a Member or Friend organisation and haven\u2019t been in touch for a while then why not give us a call to chat through what you need and we\u2019ll see how we might be able to help. VANEL news<\/h1>\n

At the VANEL staff Christmas do we said farewell to Steve Lynn<\/strong> who has left VANEL to take up a new job as ASB coordinator at North East Lincolnshire Council. Steve led the Blue Lights Brigade programme for VANEL as well as getting involved with Beach Hut No 9, Cleethorpes Community Cops, leading on HumberWatch and local neighbourhood watch programmes and more. Thanks Steve from our whole team. However, Steves new role will keep him closely in touch with us still. He\u2019ll continue to volunteer with the Blue Lights Brigade programme and we\u2019ll have crossover with many of our other projects too. From now on Steve Jones will take over leading Blue Lights Brigade<\/a> so get in touch with him for information about that programme.<\/p>\n

The IGNITE team would like your help with a survey<\/strong>. Every year we run a survey to learn about the perceptions people have about young people in North East Lincolnshire<\/strong>. The survey is quick to complete and we need your participation. Find it online here<\/a> or chat to the IGNITE team direct if you\u2019d like to give feedback in other ways.<\/p>\n

IGNITE are supporting a new venture led by volunteer Nicole called Vibrant Me<\/strong>. This is a social group for young artists (aged 16-30)<\/span> to help them gain confidence around their art. Read more about the project on our blog here<\/a> or visit the project on Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A reminder that Moon on the Water in Cleethorpes is the place to be on Monday 21st January<\/span> for the Bright Blue Monday<\/span><\/strong> event. Blue Monday<\/span> is mathematically calculated<\/a> to be the most depressing day of the year! but is also used as a national day highlighting mental health issues. Local partners in North East Lincolnshire are making this year a Bright Blue Monday<\/span> instead, to bring people together with fun and activities. Visit Moon on the Water<\/a> and there are things to do throughout the day for youngsters, families and older people too. It\u2019s free to attend, but please book (via Eventbrite here<\/a>) to help organisers get an idea of numbers. If you\u2019ve got questions then you can always speak to members of the IGNITE team who are helping with the organisation of the event. See you at Moon on the Water on the 21st.<\/span><\/p>\n

Victoria and others from the IGNITE team help run a Youth Group at West Marsh Community Centre<\/strong> each Thursday<\/span> and it\u2019s going very well. We\u2019ve got a full photo story on the blog here<\/a>. We\u2019re looking for more kids to join up and volunteers or support is also always welcome.<\/p>\n

Volunteering news<\/h1>\n

A date for your diary – the next meeting of the Volunteer Managers Network (VMN)<\/strong> will be on Wednesday 23rd<\/span> January. If you\u2019re already part of the group then you\u2019ll be getting your agenda from Liz soon. If not, but you look after volunteers and would like to be part of our network discussing good practice around volunteer management, then I suggest you speak with Liz and find out more about the Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Member news<\/h1>\n

CARE<\/strong> published a very full newsletter for December\/Christmas. It\u2019s of course a little out of date now for events, but most of the other news updates about what CARE <\/a>is up to is still useful. Read it here<\/a>. Importantly there is a goodbye message from Sarah Taylor at CARE who leaves after 10 years. Best wishes to Sarah.<\/p>\n

YMCA Humber<\/strong> will be holding their latest Sleep Easy<\/strong> fundraising and awareness raising event on Friday 1st February (6pm-6am). Sleep rough so others don\u2019t have to. All the info is on the Eventbrite page here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cyber Security<\/h1>\n

This time last year all the talk was about GDPR and that kept us all busy for a long time. (You\u2019re on top of that now I hope!). This year you\u2019ll be hearing a lot about Cyber Security and how to protect yourselves. Reports show that the charitable sector is far from ready or prepared to deal with cyber breaches, frauds or digital problems – even less so than the small business sector. So VANEL will be actively involved during 2019 helping our Members and Friends get better informed and better prepared. Expect regular briefings on our blog, in this e-newsletter and on social media. We\u2019re working with NAVCA, Humberside Police and the National Cyber Security Centre to organise briefings, resources and training locally to help you understand and tackle this serious risk.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll no doubt have noticed the huge increase in phishing emails circulating over Christmas trying to catch us all out, and there\u2019s no reason to expect these sorts of attack to stop anytime soon. Are you ready?<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re the Chair of a small Charity, then the Beacon programme from the Association of Chairs is for you. Resources, advice, workshops, training and support all targeted at those leading smaller charities. Whilst the programme is funded it\u2019s worth getting involved. Find out all the information here<\/a>.VANEL is running one of our \u201cInduction and Refresher Training for Trustees\u201d<\/strong> workshops on Friday 18th January. It\u2019s at VANEL offices, 10am start through to 12.30pm. \u00a315 per person (\u00a325 non-members) Places limited, booking essential. If you\u2019re a brand new Trustee, or need a refresher then this is the introductory session that will bring you up to speed on your responsibilities and requirements. Funding news<\/h1>\n

Round 1 of the Young Persons Holiday Respite Fund<\/strong> is now closed, but the next round is open with a closing date of 28th<\/span> February. If you know of a young person who could do with a break and you know how this can be provided, then this funding could be useful. Read all the information about what the fund can cover and how to apply here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Children’s Links<\/strong> have a job vacancy open. The role of Lead Training Officer is a 12-16 hour per week role based in Lincolnshire. The closing date is 14th Jan. If this is of interest then all the details are on their website here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

National news<\/h1>\n

Winter is coming. We\u2019ve had a mild December but that doesn\u2019t mean that a tough winter isn\u2019t round the corner. The national campaign is trying to make people aware. Share it around your offices, your community centres, tell your families and so on. Read all about it on the blog here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve been involved with the PQASSO<\/strong> quality standard before then you\u2019ll be interested to see the rebranding by NCVO. PQASSO will now be known as \u201cTrusted Charity\u201d. Read about it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Big Lottery have just announced the 100+ organisations that will benefit from an \u00a311.5m loneliness fund<\/strong> grant scheme. The full story is here<\/a> and you can download a list of the organisations and projects themselves here<\/a>. Worth seeing the types of project being funded and I noted that, although there are projects in South and West Yorkshire, we\u2019ve got nothing funded around Humberside.<\/p>\n

Keeping to the subject of fraud mentioned earlier (in the Cyber context), here\u2019s a recent story about CEO and Gift card Fraud<\/strong> that hit the headlines around Christmas<\/a>. It\u2019s a reminder about how fraud can catch well meaning charities out at any time. Make sure you and your management team are aware of these sorts of potential pitfall.<\/p>\n
