Places are extremely limited and £40per person (or £60pp for non-member organisations).

The idea of this training is to introduce project management principles, techniques, ideas, tips and good approaches so that participants understand the relevant terminology, tools and approaches. All non-profit organisations need to have a framework which allows them to plan, deliver, monitor and finish off their own sorts of projects effectively.

Attendees will learn that delivering a project well (to specification, budget, timescale etc) is not accidental and should be possible as part of a framework approach to project management. We discussed in depth, ways in which we – support organisations like VANEL – can help you – charities and voluntary organisations – to understand the risks of problems and attacks on your computer systems, learn how to take steps to reduce your risks and learn how to cope should problems arise.

In September 2017 NCSC set up a Charity focused department and this week, along with other infrastructure organisations, we learned what the NCSC Charity department has been doing so far and how their support will evolve (with help from our sector). The most visible thing so far has been the guide – “Cyber Security: Small Charity Guide” which I’ve mentioned previously in our e-bulletins and you can download here.

I’ll be sharing further information and support from NCSC and others as it becomes available over the coming months, but there are some headlines for now.

Firstly, the issue of “cyber security” is not going away, can affect everyone and cannot be ignored. Whether you have a complex organisation with staff, volunteers, many computers, mobile phones and more, or whether you are a micro non-profit with one laptop and a mailing list, cyber problems can be very real.

Q: Lost your one and only laptop – so where’s your backups?

Q: Can all your staff recognise a Phishing email when they receive it and avoid causing a problem from it?

Q: Are your passwords strong enough to prevent unauthorised access to your data (and a potential GDPR breach)?

Scary stuff. But the NCSC guide makes it clear that fairly simple steps can be taken (at zero or minimal cost) in five key areas and you’ll immediately reduce your risks. Think about your backups, your passwords, recognising Phishing, dealing with malware and protecting your mobile devices and you’re a long way home.

And should problems actually arise then there are things you can do about and people to call.

Over time there will be more advice and guidance being made available from NCSC. We discussed training and workshops, webinars and digital champions to support you and much more besides.

But for now make yourself aware of the topic. Boards, committees and trustees should think about how you will tackle these cyber topics, management and staff need to work out plans and volunteers and other staff need to be trained and supported. Start by taking a look through this first guide from NCSC and give yourself a very first ‘thing to do’.

If you’re a member of VANEL and would like to discuss Cyber Security and find out how you might be able to get support then please get in touch with Karl Elliott.

Digital and Tech

A new UK Digital code of practice is under development and is out for consultation with the voluntary sector. This “Charity Digital Code of Practice” will aim to be relevant for all charities and benefit those with ‘limited capacity for digital engagement’, and will include best practice guidelines as well as practical tips and advice. Its overall objective is to increase’ digital motivation and confidence in activities including fundraising and engaging with stakeholders’, its steering group said.

VANEL will be reviewing this code as it develops and if you would like to talk through any of the themes in it please contact Karl.
