MANAGING VOLUNTEERS<\/h1>\n

The next meeting of the Volunteer Managers Network<\/a> (VMN) is on 11th July.<\/span> <\/strong>If you\u2019re already a member of the Volunteer Development Service<\/a> (VDS) you will have received your invites already, but anyone who has responsibility for looking after volunteers can attend the Network meetings (you pay on a session by session basis). Let Liz know if you can make it.<\/span><\/p>\n

At this meeting, Michelle Lalor (Southbank PR<\/a> and ex-Editor of the Grimsby Telegraph) will be talking about better communications across the sector to raise the profile of your volunteering opportunities. Case studies and profiles of volunteers can help with promoting your service more widely and Michelle will be exploring this topic with the Network following on from recent promotions celebrating Volunteers\u2019 Week. (For an example, see a profile of Tony, one of our new Blue Lights Brigade volunteers, which Michelle wrote for the Telegraph here<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ll also share an update on the Supporting Volunteers Award (SVA) quality accreditation for volunteer management that VANEL has updated fairly recently and the session will of course have all the usual opportunities for networking, sharing good practice and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n

MEMBER NEWS<\/h1>\n

Members of the IGNITE team<\/strong> were on hand recently to help support Andy Green\u2019s 4th<\/span> Annual WE Day event<\/strong>. Victoria from the team reports on the event:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The WE Day event had over 200 pupils from multiple schools across the county come together to talk about all things social action and volunteering in a day filled with motivational speakers, workshops, singing and dancing!<\/span><\/p>\n

Primary School pupils from St. Joseph\u2019s Catholic Primary Voluntary Academy, Yarborough Academy, Scartho Junior Academy and Lays Farm Juniors were joined by their secondary school counterparts from Winterton Community Academy, Frederick Gough School and Baysgarth Academy.<\/span><\/p>\n

BBC Radio Humberside\u2019s Jack Surfleet was our compere for the day with speeches made by Diana Award Winner Freya Copeland, Diana Awards very own Paddy and entertainment from Cally Rhodes and the Winner of Lincolnshire\u2019s 2018 Search for a Star, Chloe Williams. \u00a0The event was attended by Paddy and Fiona from the Diana Awards organisation who delivered workshops on Anti-Bullying campaigns. Other workshops included IGNITE\u2019s own Ellie James talking about the Value of Volunteering: GIFHE and the Importance of Aiming Higher: Jen Vincent implored pupils to think carefully about their decisions in a \u2018Would you rather?\u2019 and finally we had the wonderful Pippa Curtin rounding up with a workshop asking \u201cWho has the Power?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

WEDay in Grimsby started back in 2015 with Andy Green and Molly Dixon speaking to 50 students at a local secondary school. Year on Year it has grown bigger and better and the IGNITE team look forward to supporting Andy again next year!<\/span><\/p>\n

Climb4 <\/strong>are running their \u201cCreate the Tiger\u201d Summer Holiday Club between 23rd July<\/span> and 30th August.<\/span> The clubs run Monday-Wednesday and cover topics that are important to health and wellbeing. Each topic is delivered in a fun and exciting way using dance, drama, arts, music and sports. <\/span> The programme is known as \u2018Inspiring the Next Generation\u2019 and is supported by BBC Children In Need. Grimsby and Cleethorpes Scouts<\/strong> have a \u201cTea Prepared\u201d fundraiser on 21st July<\/span><\/a> (11am-3pm at Cherry Garth Scouts Campsite). Come along and help them raise money for the Explorer and Network expedition to the World Scout Jamboree and Explorer Belt in Canada. FUNDING<\/span><\/h1>\n

The Community Business Bright Idead fund (from Locality)<\/span><\/a> has just re-opened for applications. The Bright Ideas Fund supports new community business ideas through the start up and planning stages with tailored business support, to the implementation stage with grants of up to \u00a315,000. The fund has now reopened. You have until 31st July<\/span> to apply. Community groups will be able to apply for support and tools to set up a community business. Round 1 of the Crime Reduction Fund (CRF)<\/a> for 2018\/19<\/span> has just closed. But round 2 is now open. VANEL NEWS<\/h1>\n

Our <\/span>\u201cCooking up a website\u201d<\/span><\/strong> training course is scheduled for Monday 9th July, 1.30-4.30pm at VANEL offices and places are still available. This is a half-day training session aimed at organisations trying to build a website, redevelop a website or simply trying to understand what ingredients go into a website, how they are assembled, what skills and resources are needed and so on. By the end of it you will understand how to manage your web development project properly. \u00a360 per person (\u00a385 non-members). Contact Karl to discuss the details or to book a place.<\/span><\/p>\n

We also have plans for two new training sessions if the demand is there from our members:
\nIntellectual Property basics for the voluntary sector
\nProject Management Primer for the voluntary sector<\/strong>
\nBoth are half-day courses aimed are introductions to these topics which come up quite often in our interactions with groups.\u00a0 Subject to interest we’ll schedule dates as convenient and sessions will cost \u00a320 per person (or \u00a330 per person for non-members). LOCAL NEWS<\/span><\/h1>\n

Can your organisation help with the next stage of the Humber Acute Service Review<\/strong>? A local partner is needed to deliver community engagement with seldom heard individuals and communities across the Humber area. Expressions of Interest need to be submitted by 12th July. The EOI form is here<\/a> and the specification for the project is here<\/a> including all the contact information you need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Big Local North Cleethorpes<\/strong> has teamed up with the businesses along North Prom in Cleethorpes to share the costs of 26 new planters to brighten up the prom. If you\u2019re down in Cleethorpes make sure you head North from the Pier to visit the businesses in that area and admire the new planters! Read the story on the Big Local website here<\/a> and find out what else this local initiative has been up to recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We\u2019ve mentioned it before, but a reminder that Jenny Hodson from VANEL<\/strong> will be doing a wing walk in September to raise money for Parkinson\u2019s UK.
