We hope you’ve had a chance to reflect this week on the valuable input volunteers put into our organisations and communities.

We were reminded at our V:Expo this week that even from partial statistics looking only at formal volunteering, nearly 12 million people in the UK get involved with volunteering, and this is probably only the tip of the iceberg when every form of volunteering is taken into account. How would we manage without volunteers! NCVO considered this in their recent blog post about ‘saying thanks to Volunteers’. We’d add to these our own thanks to all the volunteers that engage with VANEL and our various projects.

This week we’ve had two major Volunteer involving activities – our World Oceans Day event on 3rd June and our V:Expo on the 5th. World Oceans Day was an active event bringing out volunteers in force whilst V:Expo was the more reflective, learning event exploring and encouraging younger people to get involved with volunteering and social action. Thanks again to everyone who got involved. This week’s e-bulletin reflects on these two events.

Final thoughts from NCVO on Volunteers week on their blog here.

World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day itself is on 8th June, but on Sunday 3rd June the IGNITE team at VANEL held a public World Oceans Day event over in Cleethorpes at the Discovery Centre and Beach Hut No 9 (and everywhere in between).

Over 400 people took part during the day. Cleaning up the oceans of plastic was the theme and a Plastic Sculptures competing gained 48 entries! Some of the entries were very impressive – so much so that Cloverfield Academy (with two of the winning entries) gained a special prize of a hot compost bin donated by Anglian Water for their efforts. Well done to everyone who took part with the plastic sculptures – it helps to spread the message that needs to be heard.

An Anglian Water stand was demonstrating the length of time it takes plastic to degrade. Girl Guiding Lincolnshire North and Young Advisors were making craft gives from recycled plastic. Pipes Away (the Virtual Reality sewage pipe clean up experience) was once again on show – and joined this time by the Longstrip Wildlife project which is another ‘The Environment Now’ funded project.

Cleethorpes Beach Care started off at Beach Hut 9 with volunteers on a cleanup walk and 30 people collected bags and bags of interesting waste.

RNLI were involved too, along with ABP, the Merchant Naval Association, Careers at Sea, Event Medical and Water Rescue Services and the British Divers Marine Life Rescue were also all there on the day to promote their various services.

A hugely successful day all round. Thanks to all the organisations involved, all the visitors and especially – coming in Volunteers’ Week – thanks to the volunteers who got busy on the day.

Read the complete story of the day (along with photos) as told by the IGNITE team on the VANEL website here.

Visit the World Oceans Day website here to see what the theme about reducing plastic in the Oceans is all about.

V:Expo

Our V:Expo event took place at Grimsby Central Hall on 5th June. In previous years V:Expo (which VANEL is involved with along with other volunteering partners from across Lincolnshire) has been a large combined event at Lincoln showground. This year, three different events took place across the region with VANEL and the IGNITE team running an event focusing on youth volunteering in Grimsby.

We had a great afternoon and evening with lots of great speakers and workshops. We had representatives from NCVO, Volunteering Matters the National Youth Organisation and other local social action projects. We talked about issues and opportunities around youth volunteering and social action. We discussed GDPR and young people, government agenda around youth work, young people as community voices and much more.

And overall it was a chance to celebrate volunteering in general (during Volunteers’ Week) and young volunteers in particular. A local social action leader – Andy Green from Counting Hope – helped close off our event.

Thanks to everyone who was involved in the event. We hope you had a chance to focus on your own volunteers too during this Volunteers’ Week.

Volunteer Managers Network

The next Volunteer Managers Network is not until 11th July but put it in your diary, lookout for details of the agenda or contact Liz at VANEL to discuss more about the network and getting involved. Our focal point for the July meeting will be to reflect on Volunteers’ Week – what happened, what worked, what didn’t work, how to get the messages out and much more. If you’re involved with our Network then we look forward to your participation in the discussions.

REMINDERS

A reminder that the next closing date for the Crime Reduction Fund (CRF) is 14th June. There will be further rounds (next closes September), but if you’ve got a project that can tackle crime then get your application in now.

GDPR happened on the 25th May. The VANEL Privacy Policy was reissued and you can read it here. We’ve also got a final session of our GDPR Basics training course on 12th June but there are only a couple of places left. Book now if you want a place.

We have vacancies in the IGNITE team for four Youth Leadership Mentors to start in September alongside their final year studies.
