HEADLINES<\/span><\/h6>\n

V:Expo<\/a> is on 5th June<\/span> in the middle of Volunteers\u2019 Week<\/a>.<\/strong> The IGNITE team is at Central Hall with afternoon and evening events exploring topics around young people and volunteering. National keynote speakers, workshops, discussions and more. All the details here<\/a>. You can book now. If you work with young people them let them know about the event as it\u2019s a great opportunity to network and learn.<\/span><\/p>\n

We have vacancies in the IGNITE team<\/strong> for four Youth Leadership Mentors to start in September<\/span> alongside their final year studies. Know anyone? Read the details here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you missed out on Crime Reduction Fund (CRF)<\/a> funding last time around (perhaps your project wasn\u2019t ready to submit?) then you\u2019ll be pleased to hear that the 2018\/19<\/span> CRF fund has now reopened <\/strong>(funded by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner). Applications via VANEL and the first closing date is 14th June.<\/span> All the details here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

And we\u2019re feeling \u201cenvironmental\u201d at the moment. We\u2019ve just held another litter\/plastic pickup day in Cleethorpes with local school children and now we\u2019ve building up to our World Ocean\u2019s Day <\/strong>event on 3rd June<\/strong>.<\/span> Find out more about the event here and join in<\/a>. Member news<\/h6>\n

North East Lincolnshire Independent Forum<\/strong> will be holding its AGM<\/strong> on Wednesday 23rd May, starting at 12.30 at the Carers Centre, Grimsby. Their Trustees will be sharing exciting developments about what\u2019s happening now and give a summary about the future. Non-members welcome to attend (voting for members only). HealthWatch North East Lincolnshire<\/strong> has been undergoing changes. They have a new office in Grimsby, and since the retirement of Paul Glazebrook, Tracy Slattery has taken over the reins as Delivery Manager. Meet Tracy, Tayo<\/a> and the new office details here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Healthwatch <\/strong>also have a 3 minute survey<\/strong> to gauge your thoughts which will help with improving health and social care local. Complete the survey here<\/a>. They are also recruiting for its Independent Strategic Advisory Board. Full information about the board, the roles and the application process are on their website here<\/span><\/a>. Climb 4 Therapeutic Expressive Arts<\/strong> still has some places available on their next \u2018Create the Tiger\u2019 Healthy Relationships Holiday Club<\/strong>. This runs from Tuesday 29th May<\/span>– Thursday 31st May<\/span>. It\u2019s for vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people aged 5-16. The programme is known as \u2018Inspiring the Next Generation\u2019 and is supported by BBC Children In Need. More information and to book places info@climb-4-limited.co.uk<\/a>. Funding News<\/span><\/h6>\n

The final round of Humberside Youth Association (HYA) funding closes on 31st May<\/span><\/strong>. If you have an idea of a project to support younger people (or are young yourself) then get your applications in quickly. All the details here<\/a>. Apply via Richard at VANEL.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Crime Reduction Fund (CRF), funded from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner is now starting a second year of funding.<\/strong> All the details about the fund are here<\/a>. IGNITE update<\/span><\/h6>\n

\"V:expo<\/a>An important extra announcement from the IGNITE team this week – Jenny Hodson, IGNITE team leader, is doing a wing-walk to raise money for Parkinson\u2019s Disease research! She may be mad, but we\u2019d be madder still not to support her. Jenny has a JustGiving page here<\/span><\/a> and is aiming to raise over \u00a3800 for Parkinsons UK before her \u2018walk\u2019 on 15th September<\/span>. Go sponsor here for this important cause!<\/span><\/p>\n

Nicole from the IGNITE team is supporting NEXUS <\/a>with their upcoming Yoga and Fitness Buzz day on 29th May<\/span><\/a>. At 12.30 there is a Yoga session at the Grimsby Yoga Studio on Abbeygate. Free for 15-21 year olds. And at 2.30pm there is a Fitness Buzz session at Peaks Lane sports field. Again, free for 15-21years. Booking essential so if you\u2019re interested contact Nicole on the IGNITE team.<\/span><\/p>\n

Governance Weekly<\/span><\/h6>\n

A reminder about the new Welcome Pack for Trustees that the Charity Commission recently released. If you\u2019ve got new or recent trustees on board then make sure they\u2019ve seen it. It\u2019s all here<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

VANEL also continue to offer our \u201cInduction and Refresher Training for Trustees<\/strong>\u201d course on demand. So if you\u2019ve got one or more new committee members or trustees onboard, contact us and we can organise introductory training for them. Speak to Karl at VANEL.<\/span><\/p>\n

A key issue for your board or committee is ensuring your organisation is complying with all relevant legislation and obligations. Maybe your management team has got this all in hand? How do you know? NCVO have helpfully created this guidance and a downloadable template<\/span><\/a> which make it easier to check whether you\u2019ve up to date and compliant. Check it out.<\/span><\/p>\n

GDPR<\/span><\/h6>\n

The waiting is over – it\u2019s nearly here! GDPR comes into effect on 25th May<\/span>. So how ready are you? Remember that although it becomes law, there will still be work ongoing for a long time yet.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve got a page of useful resources online here<\/a>. There are so many resources out there (more every week), but these are our links to a few. Worth a mention is a new, simple infographic here about the last priorities for your preparation.<\/span><\/p>\n

VANEL has one more \u201cGDPR Basics\u201d training course<\/a> on 12th<\/span> June<\/span>. \u00a320pp for members (\u00a330 non-members). We\u2019ve only got a couple of places left as these sessions are proving popular. Book now.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve also fully updated our Privacy Policy in line with GDPR. It\u2019s at www.vanel.org.uk\/privacy<\/a> and we\u2019d be pleased if you read it. But if you\u2019re putting your own together, feel free to use ours as a starting point – but remember that you\u2019ll need to make it relevant to what you do first.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember: 4 key principles – Accountability <\/strong>(so you can evidence why you\u2019re doing what you\u2019re doing with data), Transparency <\/strong>(so everyone knows what you\u2019re doing with their data), Security <\/strong>(to keep it all safe) and Governance <\/strong>(getting the processes and culture right around data processing). Always try to address those four areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

National News<\/span><\/h6>\n

We\u2019ve mentioned it before (here), but the closing date for responding to the national Civil Society Strategy is 22nd May. All the details are here<\/span><\/a>. Have a read and make your response.<\/span><\/p>\n

Think about … Cyber Security<\/span><\/h6>\n

Are you at risk? Are you secure? or are you ignoring the possibility of a cyber attack? This is a hot topic at the moment. NCVO just blogged<\/a> about \u201cwhat happens when your charity suffers a cyber attack? And a national report<\/a> looked at the very real risks to charities of Cyber attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

You might feel this is not you. But if you have computers connected to the internet, if you have a website, if you\u2019re using email, sending e-newsletters, collecting data in databases and anything else digital then you\u2019re very much at risk – unless you assess those risks and do something about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

At VANEL we\u2019re seeing an increase in really clever spam at the moment, we\u2019ve had our own emails \u2018spoofed\u2019 (someone emailing spam and using our email address) and we\u2019ve received \u2018spoofed\u2019 mail. Years ago we\u2019ve had our own websites hacked, and we learned lessons then to put measures in place to stop this happening again (hopefully).<\/span><\/p>\n

What if your website went down? What if your emails were compromised? What if you were locked out of your systems? With GDPR now arriving, what if you lose personal data through a cyber attack? Consequences could be very damaging.<\/span><\/p>\n

So here\u2019s a simple guide on KnowHowNonProfit<\/a> you should work through. And here\u2019s a guide for charities on cyber security<\/a>. We could help you assess your issues and come up with a plan to improve your security. There\u2019s plenty you can do to assess your risks and put measures in place to reduce those risks. It\u2019s simple – don\u2019t ignore it, go assess it now – it\u2019s important!<\/span><\/p>\n

There are now four community shredders<\/strong> available across North East Lincolnshire<\/a>. These are PCC funded via CRF thanks to a project from West Marsh Community Centre. There was a write up of the shredder launch recently (here). Help cut identity fraud by telling people about the shredders<\/a> (at West Marsh Community Centre, Grant Thorold Library, Sidney Sussex Pavilion and Immingham Civic Centre).<\/span><\/p>\n\n
