A YOUNG GRIMSBY MAN and his army of volunteers have been targeting Grimsby Care Homes to bring life into the gardens!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Award winning, Ryan Chapman, 22, set up <\/span>Sentimental Gardens<\/span> in spring 2017. Sentimental Gardens primary objective at the time was to go into the gardens of the elderly whom were either currently in hospital or those whom had just been released from hospital and breathe lives into and maintain the garden to a beautiful standard until the residents were able to care for the gardens themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked about his motivation, Ryan stated: \u201cEveryone deserves a nice place to go and rest and recover.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Whilst researching, Ryan found the gardens at the Bradley Care Home were in need of makeover and with the help of the local community; they successfully managed to transform the gardens into a pleasant place of rest, recovery, contemplation and relaxation with the help of Grimsby Discount Home and Garden Centre whom where kind enough to donate the flowers to the home. While the initial aim of the project was to target individual homes, the change of focus to a care home has allowed Ryan to help more people than he first thought.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back in September,<\/span> Ryan\u2019s work was recognised locally at the West Marsh Volunteer Awards 2017. An event sponsored by DFDS. Ryan beat off fierce competition to secure the Young Persons Award.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking after the award, Ryan said \u201cI can\u2019t believe it! I set up Sentimental Gardens after my Grandad was in a care home and was disappointed that he was unable to tend to the garden due to ill health. Thank you to all the volunteers and organisations that helped out at Bradley Care Home and continue to help to this day. Thank you!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Moving forward, Sentimental Gardens is currently searching for military veterans whose gardens are in need of a much needed touch up. Ryan was able to set up Sentimental Gardens through the support of (VANEL) Voluntary Action North East Lincolnshire\u2019s IGNITE programme. IGNITE is a funded project based at VANEL\u2019s Bargate offices, employs young people to help other young people aged between 16 \u2013 30 to obtain the skills to set their own community, social action projects.<\/span><\/p>\n
