{"id":17723,"date":"2018-01-18T11:22:04","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T11:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vanel.org.uk\/va\/?p=17723"},"modified":"2018-01-19T10:24:19","modified_gmt":"2018-01-19T10:24:19","slug":"sir-stuart-etheringtons-new-year-letter-to-the-voluntary-and-community-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/vanel.org.uk\/va\/2018\/01\/sir-stuart-etheringtons-new-year-letter-to-the-voluntary-and-community-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"Sir Stuart Etheringtons\u2019 New Year letter to the voluntary and community sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Sir Stuart Etherington (NCVO Chief Executive) has published an open letter to the sector which is worth a read for anyone connected to the charitable or voluntary sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncvo.org.uk\/2018\/01\/16\/sir-stuart-etheringtons-new-year-letter-to-the-sector-2018\/\">read it here<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">In it he asks the sector to continue to rise to the challenge of building a better community through our org.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">This builds on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cass.city.ac.uk\/news-and-events\/news\/2017\/december\/voluntary-action-a-way-forward\">pamphlet<\/a> (published just before Christmas) entitled <strong>\u201cVoluntary Action: a way forward\u201d<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Sir Stuart Etherington commented:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe issue is no longer about more or less state funding, versus more or less charitable giving or volunteering. It is a move towards something new: a society where the state and its citizens share the responsibility for supporting those who need it.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s2\">We cannot simply rely on existing ways of doing things. The answer surely has to be a renaissance of personal responsibility and we should be in no doubt about the size of that change.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s2\">Crudely put, civil society has to double in size or more.
