The monthly Governance news roundup from NCVO is out for June.\u00a0 Read it here<\/a>.\u00a0 Only a few key headlines from them this month, most of which we’ve already reported in previous “Governance Weekly” columns.\u00a0 Always worth keeping an eye on this NCVO blog<\/a> though.<\/p>\n

The ICSA<\/a> Charity Governance Conference 2017<\/a> took place last week. If you missed it there are a few tweets from the day here<\/a>. Some of the themes that look like they emerged were common ones we’re trying to address with groups locally as you can hopefully see from our new training programme.<\/p>\n

And a heads-up that the NCVO Trustee Conference<\/a> has been announced for 14 November 2017 in London. Entitled “Good Governance in Action” it’s always useful.\u00a0 We’ll be there this year and sharing our feedback with you later in November.\u00a0 But if you’re going yourself, the early-bird discounts are now<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Important news is that the new “Charity Governance Code<\/strong>” (which replaces the “Code of Good Governance”) now looks set for final publication in early July. Read the latest about what has been changing and what the Code will cover here<\/a>.\u00a0 Make sure you watch out for announcements and keep an eye on the Governance page here<\/a>.\u00a0 This is an important framework document that we can all use to improve our governance approaches.\u00a0 So VANEL has scheduled a workshop on Friday 28th July<\/strong>, “Developing governance by using the Code<\/strong>“. Any trustees, chairs or managers who would like to take a collective hard and deep look at this new code, how it has changed from the original, and how to apply it in their board is encouraged to attend.\u00a0 10am-12noon. \u00a320 per attendee (\u00a330 for non-members). If you’re a trustee in a smaller charity then you probably realise you’ve got a number of issues and challenges that larger charities might not have. NPC <\/a>have just published a short report on this – “Small charity trustees: How to overcome key challenges”. Download it for free and have a read here<\/a>. (If you’re a member of the VANEL Trustee Network then you could discuss this on the AboutGovernance forum too.)\u00a0 The three key challenges identified and addressed in the report are:
\n– coping with limited funds and staff capacity;
\n– balancing governance and operational roles; and
\n– attracting new talent and keeping the board energised<\/p>\n

Finally for this week. Another excellent guide has been produced by ACEVO – “Financial governance: a gentle guide for the non-financial charity trustee<\/strong>“.\u00a0 Find out more or order it here<\/a>. If you’re an ACEVO member then it’s free, but otherwise it’s just \u00a39.99 for the e-download of this guide and still well worth it.\u00a0 Many trustees are fearful of finances even though they technically are all jointly responsible for oversight of a charity’s finances. So this guide covering finances in a non-scary way is valuable. Why not invest \u00a310 for a copy for your board?<\/p>\n
