News, information, resources and ideas. Complemented by our monthly “View from the Top” e-newsletter (Trustee Network members only), our “aboutgovernance” online discussion space for leaders and trustees and our @aboutgovernance Twitter feed.

The Charity Commission has just updated and reissued their guidance CC25 – Charity Finances: trustee essentials. (Download it or read it here). This is an important resource for all boards and trustees. It should also be read in conjunction with CC20 – Charity fundraising: a guide to trustee duties.

What does CC25 cover? It looks at ways to make the most of your finances, looks at financial management, managing risk, putting sound financial controls in place, charity reserves, dealing with financial difficulties, income generation, fundraising, trading, insurance, land, expenses and more.

Both CC25 and CC20 are important documents that every trustee should read. After all, although you may have a treasurer, it’s still the responsibility of each and every trustee to keep and eye on the finances of your organisation. So take the opportunity now that CC25 is updated to take the time to review what is said.

It’s one year to go now (May 2018) until the new GDPR regulations (General Data Protection Regulations) come into effect. Every business and charity will need to comply. Your staff and management team might be on top of this, but you as both the board as a whole and as an individual trustee also have oversight and responsibilty for this.

Ask questions, find out what GDPR is about (clue: it’s an evolution of the existing laws and regulations around data protection). There might be a lot of work for you to do, to change processes, to rework websites, put documentation in place, address staff training etc. It’s the law, so get a head start on it!

Read a couple of guides to GDPR here and here and here. But during the summer VANEL will run a workshop (non-legal) to bring you up to date. Don’t ignore it – you’re looking at Data Protection already (I hope), so this is just a next step. Any questions contact VANEL.

On a similar note, the new fundraising preference service comes into effect over the summer and this allows donors to opt out of receiveing marketing from charities. So do you understand the law on this? We’ll return to this in future news but for now have a read of this document.

The NCVO civil society almanac for 2017 is now out. It’s full of useful facts and information about the size and shape of the sector. Browse all the data online here – start with the executive summary here. Here’s an NCVO blog article exploring a summary of the Almanac. Worth a browse and useful for when you are seeking funding or carrying out business planning to understand the big picture and set your work in context.

It’s pretty obvious we’re in the run up to the General Election now. This may or may not affect you directly – it depends what causes you might campaign on, or how purdah affects your communications. But NCVO has an election message too: Charities and Volunteering make Britain great. Read their blog article here. What do you think?

If you follow the Charity Commission news (which you really should be doing) then you’ll see that they are planning to issue new digital services very soon which make it easier for charities to deal with commission administration – such as changing the name of a charity. Keep an eye out for more news (and I’ll share it here too). But if the idea of using technology makes you cold, why not come along to our Technology for Trustees workshop on Friday 19th May 10am-12noon. More details here or contact me direct.

Finally, a reminder about our “Induction and Refresher Training for Trustees”. Our next session is on Friday 26th May, 10am-12noon at VANEL offices & £10pp for members. Find out more here and contact me to book a place.

To discuss governance, trusteeship or leadership, or to subscribe to the Trustee Network, please drop me a line.

Karl Elliott, Development Manager
www.vanel.org.uk/governance – for resources and information
www.theviewfromthetop.org.uk
www.youngleadersmatter.org.uk
@aboutgovernance

Our weekly roundup of news related to governance, trusteeship and leadership: Just a few updates this week on new guidance related to finance from the Charity Commission and other news that you should be familiar with as Trustees.

[5,391,11
139
