There he works as an Advanced Practitioner of Restorative Practice within the Creating Strong Communities (CSC) department. Over the last six years, Marcus has been working with a number or organisations within North East Lincolnshire in order to build and develop Restorative Practices locally. As a result of the Creating Strong Communities programme, a new framework for practice within Children’s services, as well as the wider organisation has been created, and a Restorative Leadership programme has been developed.

In his capacity as Restorative Practice Champion for both VANEL, and NELC, Marcus has trained over 700 people about Restorative Practices – the majority of whom come from fields such as social work, teaching, the NHS, and the Police force. The training Marcus provides is specifically for the benefit of anyone working with children and families. He has also conducted over 70 Community Dialogues on the subject of Justice, identity and the cornerstones of humanity, locally. He is an Expert Adviser to the Ministry of Justice in regards to Restorative Practices and is one of only 30 people in the world to hold a Master’s Degree in Restorative Justice.

Pictured: Marcus Czarnecki, Restorative Practices Champion and author of ‘Being Restorative’.

The workbook, ‘Being Restorative’, complements the course of the same name that Marcus, and his colleagues at CSC created in March 2016, and is available free of charge in PDF format to anyone taking part in the ‘Being Restorative’ training course. Both the course and the workbook champion the idea of ‘being the change you wish to see’ within your community, and highlights the fact that people are ‘happier, more cooperative and productive, and more likely to make positive changes in their behaviour when those in positions of authority do things with them, rather than to them or for them’.

Speaking about his experience as part of his work as Restorative Practice Champion, Marcus said: “It has been an incredible privilege to be trusted as the Restorative Justice trailblazer for North East Lincolnshire, and for that I would like to thank VANEL Trustees, VANEL’s Chief Officer Paula Grant, Paul Morris, Paul Carlile and the rest of the Creating Strong Communities team. I would also like to thank the Community Safety Partnership NELC, and in particular, Colin Lomas and Spencer Hunt”.

Over the last few months, Marcus has been working closely with The University of Hull and is helping to develop a ‘Being Restorative’ module within the universities’ BA and MA Social Work courses. It is hoped that by introducing this module, students studying for their social work degree will have a better understanding of what restorative practices are, and how they can benefit the community as a whole before they enter the world of work.

If you would like to learn more about Restorative Practices and Community Dialogues, Marcus would be more than happy to have a conversation with you about about these matters.
