Grant-aided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the research for this project has been carried out by volunteers based in Hull and Grimsby.

The end-result of No Fish Today is the documentary to be screened on Estuary TV and a special exhibition. This will be displayed at Grimsby Minster and Grimsby Central Hall, Duncombe Street, Grimsby, as well as Holy Trinity Church in Hull, alongside the colourful and renowned display of thousands of poppies by artist Martin Waters. Appropriately, his theme for 2016 is Shot at Dawn, reflecting the tragic execution of soldiers in World War 1.

The research has also yielded some 21st century activity, with the current campaign to return the Viola to East Yorkshire from South Georgia in the South Atlantic, and the official preservation status granted to the Arfon in August, which was found two years ago off the Dorset coast. As part of the project, three descendants of the Arfon crew were brought together and they will launch the exhibition at Holy Trinity in Hull on Saturday 5th November.

Janet Humberstone from Louth is the grand-daughter of Edward Youngs, the father-of-two who served on the Arfon. She and her sister Wendy met up with one of the volunteer researchers, Sheila Coates from Hedon in East Yorkshire, who is the great-great granddaughter of James Doy, the ship’s cook, as part of the project.

She says: “I have been researching Edward for some time and for me to meet Sheila, another descendant, and swap notes was brilliant. What has struck me is the sad fate of some of the families who were left, whilst Edward’s widow and children were able to benefit from a captain’s pension, even though he didn’t actually manage to skipper a vessel before his death. I’m thrilled at this documentary and exhibition.”

Lia Nici, Estuary TV’s Executive Producer, says: “This is what community television is for, telling fascinating stories about local events. I am very grateful to the volunteers who have given so much time to this project, uncovering so much information and organising the exhibitions.”

The one-hour documentary, narrated by volunteer Tony Barker, features interviews with descendants and historians including Dr Robb Robinson of the University of Hull and the writer Alec Gill. It will be premiered before an invited audience in Hull before being screened on Estuary TV. The programme will be aired at 7pm on Sunday 6th November and again the following Sunday during a special memorial day of programming on the station. The documentary will also be available to view via estuary.tv.

Estuary can be found on Freeview Channel 7 and Virgin Channel 159.

The contribution of hundreds of trawlermen from Grimsby and Hull, who formed a minesweeping operation in World War One to protect the Royal Navy, will be marked with a one hour documentary and exhibition by Estuary TV, the region’s local broadcaster of news and entertainment.
