Shona came up with the idea to organise a Macmillan Coffee morning and contacted the IGNITE team for help. The coffee morning which was set to start at 11:00am, started a little earlier than expected, as crowds of people were drawn inside by the colourful array of home-made cakes, muffins and scones. The vintage theme of the event, only served to heighten the festivities further, with all crockery being kindly lent to us by Penny Armstrong, owner of ‘Penny’s from Heaven’. The event was also home to a tombola, with nearly 30 prizes having been donated thanks to the generosity of several local businesses. The top prize up for grabs was a genuine Pandora ring which was donated by Tukes’ Café. The ring was won by VANEL member, Rob Russell, who was the closest to guessing the hidden raffle ticket number attached to the ring. We’re sure that his daughter Victoria will be very pleased. Also present at the coffee morning were Media Make-Up students from the Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education, who offered up their face painting skills in exchange for a small donation to Macmillan.

As anticipated, the cake competition proved to be one of the highlights of the day, with no less than 11 cakes being submitted for judgement into one of the three competition categories: Best Sponge, Best Tray Bake and Best Muffin or Cupcake. Springboard Advisor, Rhonda Herle, along with her team of Youth Members, entered a plethora of eye catching cupcakes decorated to look like hedgehogs, cacti and the Cookie Monster, to name a few. VANEL employees Richard Wendel-Jones, Jenny Hodson and Helen Pickett, had the category for ‘Best Tray Bake’ covered, entering a Lemon Drizzle, Black Sticky Ginger Bread and a cheesecake respectively. The unfortunate task of judging each of the cakes entered into the competition fell to VANEL Treasurer Leslie Brown, Tukes’ Café Manager Collette Gibson, Tukes’ Café waitress Martina Dringley, and volunteers, Josh Maynard, Lachlan Thain and Kye Spencer.

It was a tough job but somebody had to do it. As the room awaited the verdict of the judges with bated breath, the dedication of each judge was exemplified by their reluctance to assign a winner to each category after just one mouthful. Following staunch discussion between the five judges, the winners of each category were revealed and awarded with a £20 gift voucher, as donated by Grimsby Snaprats. Tukes’ Café Kitchen Assistant, John Williamson, whisked the judges taste buds into a frenzy with his light and fluffy Red Velvet cake and went on to win the coveted title of ‘Best Sponge’. Rhonda Herle and her Springboard team really did put the icing on the cake, winning the title ‘Best Muffin or Cupcake’ with their beautifully decorated Hedgehog cupcakes. And finally, the title ‘Best Tray Bake’ went to Helen Pickett for her doubly delicious Strawberry and Flake cheesecake.

When asked how she felt the Macmillan Coffee Morning went, IGNITE Project Leader Shona said: “I think the coffee morning went really well, I know a lot of people enjoyed winning the prizes on the tombola and tasting the cakes from the competition.” She added: “I would love to work with IGNITE team again in the future.
