Trustees\u2019 Week is 2nd<\/sup> \u2013 8th<\/sup> November<\/span> and you can read about the National programme and what\u2019s going on here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve recently outlined in our newsletters<\/a> about various events that we were planning for the week, but instead we\u2019ve simplified things and are this year focusing around one main \u201cTrustees Network\u201d meeting<\/strong> on the afternoon of Tuesday 3rd<\/sup> November at Cromwell Road Community Fire Station<\/strong>. More details below.<\/p>\n

Trustees Network Meeting<\/strong><\/h6>\n

Tue 3rd<\/sup> Nov, 1 \u2013 4.30pm at Cromwell Road Community Fire Station<\/a>.<\/strong>
\n1pm start (refreshments, networking and sign in from 12.45pm)
\nFree to attend to anyone interested in trusteeship, governance or committee skills. Whether you are a board member, trustee, committee member or thinking about this, then come along.

Charity Commission guidance to charity Trustees has been simplified but also strengthened recently. There are many things that Trustees \u201cshould\u201d do. Do you and your board understand these obligations? Do you understand the checks that you need to carry out to ensure your trustees are fit and eligible to hold that role?<\/p>\n

This topic \u2013 \u201cwhat does \u2018should\u2019 really mean\u201d will be the first topic of the afternoon to kick off our discussions. After that, and throughout the afternoon, we\u2019ll be talking about \u2013 and discussing together in a workshop\/network style forum \u2013 a range of important topics that affect boards, committees, trustees and volunteers. Every 15 minutes we\u2019ll switch topics to keep the discussions moving along and fresh.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll discuss issues around recruitment, the code of good governance, technology, approaches to funding, measuring impact and much more. We\u2019ve already got a range of topics to cover, but if the audience wants to \u2018pitch\u2019 something for us to discuss together then that\u2019s what we\u2019ll discuss.<\/p>\n

Please let us know if you are planning to attend (contact Karl as above). If you are coming, perhaps you could let us know of one or more issue, problems, challenges or questions that are on your mind \u2013 maybe we can add them into the plans for the afternoon.<\/p>\n

An introduction to the Trustee role<\/strong><\/h6>\n

We also have a number of groups and volunteers talking to us about our \u201cRoles and Responsibilities of Trustees\u201d introductory, two hour workshop (aimed at prospective or new trustees or committee members). We\u2019ve filled a couple of these sessions already and we\u2019re now scheduling more sessions on demand and we\u2019d like to hear from anyone who would like to attend.<\/p>\n

Normally now we charge \u00a310 per person to attend these sessions, but up to the end of National Trustees\u2019 Week we have 12 places available for free<\/strong> to the first people to contact us to book. (Limited to 2 people per group\/board\/committee and subject to a few other terms and conditions). Contact Karl Elliott (karl@vanel.org.uk<\/a> or 01472 361043) to discuss or book.<\/p>\n

The next \u201cRoles and Responsibilities\u201d session will be scheduled for November sometime once we have enough bookings.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, why not go and read the updated \u201cEssential Trustee\u201d from the Charity Commission<\/a>. All Trustees (new or otherwise) should be familiar with this guidance, and it\u2019s useful for anyone attending our Roles sessions.<\/p>\n

Developing the next generation of charity leaders<\/strong><\/h6>\n

We\u2019re also organising a special event on Friday 6th<\/sup> November hosted at Franklin College as part of both Trustees\u2019 Week and National Youth Work Week<\/a>. This \u201cYoung People\u2019s Voice\u201d event will involve our local MPs and Leon Ward (a nationally recognised youth trustee advocate) and will be a way for young people to discuss and debate how they can take an increasingly active and important part of leadership of our communities.<\/p>\n

Leon has recently been involved with a new guide \u201cYoung Trustees Guide\u201d<\/strong> which should be of interested to any young people expanding their leadership horizons as well as to local charities and groups thinking about involving younger people with their own committees and boards. We\u2019re looking forward to this event and will share stories and learning from it after the end of National Trustees\u2019 Week.<\/p>\n
