{"id":107,"date":"2012-10-23T11:05:43","date_gmt":"2012-10-23T10:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vanel.org.uk\/va\/?page_id=107"},"modified":"2013-02-21T12:07:41","modified_gmt":"2013-02-21T12:07:41","slug":"community-development-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/vanel.org.uk\/va\/big-issues\/community-development-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>What is Community Development?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1. \u00a0 A long-term process<\/b> which goes at local residents&#8217; pace.<br \/>\nCommunity development has to take the necessary time to help communities develop themselves, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bringing people together to explore their lives and issues, and understanding the root causes of their concerns;<\/li>\n<li>Identifying which other organisations, agencies or influential people might be supportive or targets for change;<\/li>\n<li>Helping communities to identify the changes that they would want to achieve;<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging communities to feel they can make a difference;<\/li>\n<li>Exploring previous attempts to change things, and what can be learnt;<\/li>\n<li>Supporting the communities in agreeing shared visions and priorities for action;<\/li>\n<li>Agreeing a useful way to assess their progress and evaluate their impact (outcomes and indicators);<\/li>\n<li>Providing user-friendly frameworks to help the communities make plans and build their own organisations;<\/li>\n<li>Delivering training or finding appropriate learning opportunities;<\/li>\n<li>Finding all the resources they need;<\/li>\n<li>Challenging communities where necessary, so that they are inclusive towards all community members;<\/li>\n<li>Supporting individual residents so they can stay onboard (welfare);<\/li>\n<li>Helping the communities reflect and learn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This long-term approach is essential to ensure changes are sustainable and long-lasting.<\/p>\n<p><b>2. \u00a0 A value-based process<\/b><br \/>\nThe key purpose of community development practice is to challenge disadvantage\u00a0\u00a0 and\u00a0inequality, and to build communities based on the principles of social justice, equality and mutual respect.<\/p>\n<p>Community development has to tackle power issues to be effective in supporting communities to achieve positive social change. Community development&#8217;s notion of positive social change is rooted in community development&#8217;s core values: <i>social justice<\/i>, <i>equality <\/i>and <i>anti-discrimination<\/i>, <i>collective action<\/i>, <i>community empowerment<\/i> and <i>working and learning together<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b>3.\u00a0 Social Change outcomes<\/b><br \/>\nCommunity development is seeking to address power imbalances in society and help communities to empower themselves without oppressing others.<\/p>\n<p>So here is the definition of community development, enshrined in the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Community Development Work (2009):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>&#8220;Community Development is a long-term value based process which aims to address imbalances in power and bring about change founded on social justice, equality and inclusion.&#8221;<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-107\" data-postid=\"107\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-107 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is Community Development? 1. \u00a0 A long-term process which goes at local residents&#8217; pace.
