Bid Society Capital

Near the end of 2011 I attended a briefing on Big Society Capital (previously promoted as the Big Society Bank) in Sheffield.

The concept was sound – use dormant account money from banks to invest in social projects.  But at that time the scheme was still stuck awaiting EU approval before it could plan how the money could be distributed.

Well, the EU has now given that approval (see article here).

It will still take a while before the scheme gets further authorisation from the Financial authorities in the UK and then sets to work deciding who will front the distribution of these funds.

If we hear anything more about how this money might eventually become accessible to our area then we’ll let you know.

Thanks.

Karl

2. RETAIL ESSENTIALS PROGRAMME SUCCESS
A free pilot training programme which was devised by Crosby Employment Bureau, working in partnership with Freshney Place and supported by the Change programme, has recently seen six candidates complete the first six day course.

The course has been designed to equip people with the core skills and confidence to work in a retail environment. As a result of attending the training course the learners have gained three accredited qualifications including a certificate in retail essentials, health and safety and manual handling.

Business Link update

An update from Business Link:
Dear Partner

I promised to keep you up to date with developments in business support before our closure on 25th November 2011.

Business Link services

I attach an update summarising our latest understanding of what will be available nationally, as well as details of how to access online copies of our current, and final, events programmes covering September – November.  (see attached)

You can keep up to date with the latest information on the changes the Department for Business Innovation and Skills – BIS – are making, by registering for their Business Improvement Newsletter at:

http://www.bis.gov.uk/site/connect/newsletters/business-improvement

BIS have also developed a ‘toolkit’ which you can use to communicate with your business contacts and can be accessed through the following link:

http://www.bis.gov.uk/policies/enterprise-and-business-support/business-improvement/toolkit

UKTI services

Please be aware that UKTI services are continuing in the region. Take up of UKTI services has fallen recently, due to the uncertainty about Business Link, and we are very keen to ensure that businesses across the region maximise the support available through UKTI to develop their international trade. My update includes a summary of the UKTI services that are available now and will continue to be available through to the end of March 2012. It would be very helpful if you could ensure your colleagues are aware of this service and push the message out to relevant local businesses.

Further Update

We remain committed to keeping both our customers and partners fully informed about the forthcoming changes to the business support landscape, and to ensure a smooth a transition as possible to the new arrangements. We will therefore be back in touch as information is made available to us before we close.

If you would like to nominate someone else to receive our updates please let me know. Similarly, if you do not wish to be copied in to any further communications again please advise.

Best wishes

Helen West

Chief Executive
