Exceeding Expectations: Principles of Outstanding Leadership
Not read it yet, but this might show some interesting findings.
This is a report published back in Jan 2010 which investigated the principles of outstanding leadership.
The pdf is here and information about it is here.
To read… food for thought…
A couple of interesting articles found by Peter Fryer for your interest.
First an article on Sustainable Leadership
and one on a controversial approach to leadership – employees first.

Looking for something to read?
If you’ve the time, and you’re interested in leadership development then I have to recommend you pop over to the articles page on the Stellar Leadership website. There’s a wide range of short, focused and interested articles there. All should get you thinking.
As always, please share your thoughts and comments online. Thanks. Karl
Particularly good starting point is the article entitled “Leadership in the Third Sector” here.
Why invest in Leadership?
Why does the Thrive Leaders Network exist? Why should we concern ourselves with issues around developing leadership in our sector?
Developing or supporting leaders and developing leadership skills within the Third Sector still seems to take a low priority for most groups and indivdiuals. Many studies demonstrate that the private sector and even the public sector are willing to invest time, effort and money in developing leadership as they understand that this has beneficial long term benefits to their organisations. So shouldn’t we in the Third Sector be taking leadership development just as seriously?
I’ve come across this document (thanks ACEVO) which discusses (in depth) about investing in leaders. It specifically looks at the cross over from the private sector and how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can bring private and third sector together for the mutual benefit of both through developing leaders.
Have a read. Share your thoughts…
How great leaders inspire action
Found this interesting presentation on TED. Have you made a habit yet of getting inspiration from the videos there??
Simon Sinek delivers a presentation entitled “How great leaders inspire action”. Worth a watch. Also check out his website.
“Trust” book
With our theme for Monday being Trust (and the theme for today being Election!) I’ve come across a new book “Trust: How we lost it and how we get it back”. Maybe there’s something we can learn here??
More about the book here and here. I have a couple of copies for the Leaders Network to share around as part of my new “book club” concept.
If anyone has a view on this and would like to post a book review here, let me know.
Are you using the wrong leadership competencies?
This article on Stephen Billing’s Blog is worth a read – article here. (suggested by Peter Fryer).
It might talk about Competency Frameworks, which we may not all be using, but importantly it discusses what the actual competencies a leader might posses are. How do you stack up? How does your organisation assess, value or propel forward these competencies?
The Challenge for Third Sector Leaders
These are difficult times for all organisations – third sector or otherwise. And the expectation is that in the short term things are not going to get much easier. Dealing with the realities for now and the future is the work of our leaders. Hopefully our Leaders Network gives an opportunity for our local leaders to meet and support one another.
SocietyGuardian recently hosted a roundtable discussion with NAVCA looking at the state of the Third Sector to meet the challenges ahead. The session, “Can the third sector do more with less?” makes interesting reading. Read it here.
Liberating Leadership revisited
Last year I introduced the “Liberating Leadership” programme being run nationally by the Community Sector Coalition & wondered whether this would provide useful resources for the sector.
Alan Burley (Development Worker for East Marsh Involve) has now been on the first part of this new programme and has very positive feedback. Alan will be at the next meeting of the Leaders Network (1st March at Grimsby Neighbourhood Centre) and will be describing the programme, the training and the toolkit which we should be able to utilise.
See you at the meeting. Karl
