What is a Hack? What are we Hacking??
The IT Supporters Network is primarily about being practical, solving problems, doing what we do better or doing new, creative or innovative things. All using technology. Hopefully we’re not into theory – it’s about helping individuals and organisations actually work better.
A “hack” is a quick, simple, effective, perhaps inelegant, but practical solution to a problem or issue – perhaps even an issue we didn’t know we had!
So the IT Network is about solving real-world problems for non-profit organisations using technology – a series of “hacks”.
Rather than share general information or highly technical information, we’re going to attempt to address real issues and challenges. From this page you can get access to our various hacks…
It’s also up to you.
Each “hack” is a real problem or issue and a sharing of solutions, ideas and practical support. It’s also a discussion or a conversation. Hopefully not all the support will come from me – it would be great if we can all help each other and share ideas to make each solution better.
So find a “hack” that matters to you, read what I’ve shared so far and then contribute or ask questions or get involved in the discussion – let’s get the best possible solutions to our issues as a sector.
Do you think there’s a problem we should be tackling? Drop me a line (karl@vanel.org.uk), give me a call 01472 231123 or better still add your thoughts to our conversation below. I’ll be reviewing what people and groups want/need and be starting off conversations and new ‘hacks’.

Using the CTX scheme
Registered charities should be using the CTX programme to get free or near-free software. How can you use the scheme and make the most of it? We’ve run CTX masterclasses previously, now I provide 1:1 support and online information is coming soon. Do you use CTX or want to? Read on…
Social Media Policies
Organisations have staff & volunteers using social media more and more, and most do it without any formal understanding between the organisation and the individuals. We’re working towards a Social Media policy template that’s good for any group. Read on…
Effective Online Applications
Many funding applications are now online via the web. This poses technical challenges for small groups with poor IT, IT skills or IT support. I’m keen to develop a ‘good practice’ guide and toolkit for groups to use when tackling online applications. Read on…
Websites – don’t be invisible
These days if a non-profit has no website it can be invisible to users, the community, partners, donors or funders. Building a website is quicker and easier than ever – but still an uphill struggle if you don’t know how. We’re continually looking at ways to help groups go online.
Currently we run “cooking up a website” sessions, run an ongoing WebClub support group, occassional WordPress masterclasses and can provide some direct support. Read on for more info about how else groups can get online…
That’s the highlights. Read the full index of our hacks here.
